Bottom Line

The 300-year-old George Hotel is a historic treasure in central Penrith that is best suited for couples and dog owners, considering its pet-friendly lounge, ballroom with balcony, elegantly furnished bar, restaurant with a wine cellar, and access to sister hotel’s leisure club. The 35 rooms are classically furnished and feature flat-screen TVs. Weekend partygoers and street traffic, though, can make for noisy nights. The Temple Sowerby House Hotel offers quieter rooms.

Scene

Intimate hotel with old world charm, elegant dining, and a modern bar

The George Hotel is a historical heritage site, dating back three centuries. Many of the hotel’s original designs have been left intact. A small Georgian entrance on the street leads into an ornately designed lobby that features wood-paneled walls, red carpeting, and traditional furniture. Hallways are old-fashioned with red patterned carpeting, wood banisters, and stained-glass windows. Most guests are couples seeking a laid-back, romantic getaway.

Location

Tucked in the bustling town of Penrith

The George Hotel is located on the cobblestone streets of Penrith, across from the marketplace clock tower. The Devonshire shopping centre -- with a book store, clothing shops, and restaurants -- is in the same building as the hotel. The Penrith Castle and park -- near the train station -- is a six-minute walk away, while the Alhambra Cinema is 28 minutes by car. The Aira Force waterfall is a 24-minute drive. The Lakeland Bird of Prey Centre -- with a wide collection of birds -- is a 13-minute drive away. An ancient stone circle, Long Meg and Her Daughters is an 18-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Classically designed rooms with old-fashioned charm and flat-screen TVs

Standard, club, and feature rooms are all pet-friendly at the George Hotel. Classic furniture and carpeting in neutral tones infuses a homey feel into rooms. Club rooms offer double or twin beds and bathrobes. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs and tea/coffee machines, and most have trouser presses. Bathrooms are modern and clean with wood flooring, heated towel racks, and shower/tub combos. Special romantic arrangements, such as flowers and champagne, can be requested. Windows in rooms face the parking lot or courtyard. Rooms on the street side can get noisy from partygoers outside.

Features

Charming conference facilities and a nearby, fully-equipped leisure center

There are three traditionally furnished conference rooms: the regency suite (for up to 40 people), the cottage suite (fitting up to 26) and business center (for six people). There’s also a ballroom -- with red carpeting, ornate red draperies on large windows and a balcony -- that can fit up to 150 people. Modern audiovisual equipment and Wi-Fi is available.

Guests also have access to the Lodore Falls Hotel’s leisure club, which is 30 minutes by car. The club offers a tennis court, indoor pool, an outdoor heated pool with a kiddy pool, a hot tub, a gym, beauty salon and bike rentals.

Fireplaces, stained-glass dome ceiling accents, decorative china, and historical photos hung on the walls give the on-site lounge a homey and welcoming feeling. The lounge and Dappers bar are both pet-friendly. The hotel also takes reservations for afternoon tea. The elegant Devonshire restaurant also has a bit of old world charm, with a wine cellar, rich red draperies, and carpeting, chandeliers and views of the bustling street. There is no dress code for the restaurant. The hotel also hosts themed dinners, including murder mystery parties.
