The 46-room Newby Bridge Hotel is a charming, old-timey getaway with pretty lawns and a peaceful riverfront location. The hotel offers a dog-friendly bar, a classic restaurant, a billiard room, and an indoor pool with a hot tub and steam room. Rooms have traditional decor -- some a bit worn and outdated -- as well as flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, and (in some) whirlpool tubs. The Swan Hotel and Spa, which has rooms that receive better reviews, might be an alternative option.
Scene
A cozy lakeside hotel with an indoor pool and hot tub
The Newby Bridge Hotel is a charming mid-range hotel with lovely gardens and partial lake views. Some of the interior decor, though, is a bit dated. The reception area and lounge are filled with traditional furnishings: floral drapes, blue and red carpeting, dark wood furniture, and red sofas. Hallways and stairs are also lined in red carpeting. The hotel does not have an elevator. It was originally called the New Bridge Mansion, and was built by James Machel in 1793. It was one of the first mansions on the banks of Lake Windermere.
The front of the hotel -- with an outdoor parking lot -- faces a busy street that runs by River Leven. Guests can take fishing trips on the hotel’s boat, docked on Lake Windermere. Sprawling lawns feature Grecian sculptures, colorful gazebos, and lovely sitting areas. The lush landscape makes the hotel feel secluded and romantic, appealing to couples.
Location
Located south of Lake Windermere
The hotel is near the banks of River Leven in Newby Bridge. There is a rather busy street that runs in front of the hotel, but the location feels nice and secluded. In the immediate area there are other small hotels. Lake Windermere Cruises is a 14-minute drive away. The closest gas station is one minute by car. Fell Foot Park is a two-minute drive. Driving to the Anglers Arms bar takes four minutes. Roudsea Wood and Mosses National Nature Reserve is 14 minutes by car. The Cartmel Racecourse is 13 minutes away. The World of Beatrix Potter, an interaction exhibit about Peter Rabbit, is a 14-minute drive.
Rooms
Classic rooms with flat-screen TVs, garden views, and whirlpool tubs
The hotel's 46 rooms are all furnished with traditional decor. Though the look varies, many rooms have floral curtains, dated wall-to-wall carpeting, and wooden furniture. Amenities include kettles, heated towel racks, and flat-screen TVs. Double rooms have narrow bathrooms. Family rooms have larger bathrooms with shower/tub combos. Five rooms have four-poster wooden canopy beds; the one we saw in this category had a whirlpool tub in a spacious bathroom. The Rotunda Room is housed in a replica Grecian temple, and has Grecian decor, French doors, a mural, wood floors, Corinthian columns, a skylight, LED lighting, an iPod dock, and garden views from a private terrace. The bathroom is black and sleek, with a rainfall shower head.
Features
Dining and cocktails with garden views and three conference rooms
The on-site restaurant is traditional with wood-beamed ceilings, blue and tan velvet chairs, wood-paneled walls, a buffet, and garden views. Some herbs, fruit, and vegetables on the menu come from the hotel’s garden. A kids' menu is available. The bar is also classically designed and features old-timey furnishings, ornately carved wood chairs, and a log fireplace.
The hotel offers three conference rooms, including the Garden Room, Oak Room, and the Lakeview Lounge. The Oak and Lakeview rooms can fit up to 40 people and the Garden room can fit a maximum of 100 people. Catering can be requested. The hotel also has wedding services.
The indoor pool also features Greek art with a sea mural, a blue and white tiled deck, and a hot tub. Large windows look into a small gym with cardio equipment and a water cooler. There’s also a small steam room.
