Bottom Line

The 89-room Triton Hotel is a budget-friendly, family-run hotel close to the lively town of Malia's renowned nightlife; it attracts primarily British holiday-goers on packaged trips. The basic rooms are divided between the more modern main building and the dimmer and more cramped annex opposite. The complex is centered around a good-sized pool, and has a run-down playground area for kids, as well as a large pool bar and restaurant. In general, the hotel is somewhat run-down, but affordable rates and a convenient location attract young singles and couples during the party-heavy high season, and families with younger children in the off season.

Scene

This basic, budget hotel is popular with partygoers and families.

The Triton Hotel is a basic, budget hotel popular with partygoers in the high season and families the rest of the year. The complex is clean and standard for hotels of its caliber in the area, with boxy, salmon-colored stucco buildings framing the central pool and cafe/bar area. A cafeteria-style restaurant with long communal tables serves buffet meals for those on the all-inclusive rate option, while a breezy outdoor pool snack bar consists of colorful patio furniture under shading awnings. The concrete pool deck is lined with blue loungers, with long awnings for shade. The small playground area is quite run-down, and the grass around there is patchy at best. The pool can become quite lively, both with young partygoers and children.

Location

On a quiet road close to the beach and Malia's main strip

The Triton Hotel is located on a quiet road a five-minute walk from the beach, and only slightly further from the main strip of shops, bars, restaurants, and nightlife in the lively resort town of Malia. Its convenient location makes it popular with partygoers on a budget. Other sights within a short drive of the hotel include several large water parks, the picturesque island of Spinalonga, and the fabled Minoan ruins at Knossos.

Rooms

Rooms here are small and basic; those in the main building are brighter and have small balconies, while those in the annex are darker and older.

The Triton Hotel's 89 rooms are divided between a more modern poolside building and an older annex opposite. The decor is basic and dated, but clean and standard compared to similar hotels in the area; the cheap furniture is made of blonde or white painted wood, floors are a cool tile, and most of the rooms' color comes from painted accent walls. Rooms in the newer building have balconies -- the best views are from higher floors, naturally -- while those in the older building tend to be darker and dingier, with even more basic facilities. Bathrooms are especially basic, with just small shower stalls with curtains. All rooms have tube TVs, and amenities like air-conditioning and safes come with a fee. Rooms near the pool tend to be noisiest.

Features

Games and playground area, pool with bar/cafe, buffet restaurant for all-inclusive guests, and business center

The Triton Hotel is centered around its average-sized, lounger-lined pool, flanked by a pool bar and an adjoining cafe with a shaded terrace. Just beyond that, there's a run-down playground and games area for kids. Also on the pool deck are an open-air game room with air-hockey and a pool table. Indoors, there's a restaurant that serves buffet meals to guests on all-inclusive rate plans, as well as another snack cafe. The hotel also has a small business center with several computers where internet is available for a fee. The hotel also offers free Wi-Fi. Most guests are on British tour packages, but day trips can be organized through the hotel, too.
