Bottom Line

The mid-range, 325-room Star Beach Village & Water Park is a lively, all-inclusive property drawing primarily families with its sprawling beachfront water park containing multiple pools and slides. This all-inclusive property is set a 10-minute drive from central Hersonissos, and 30 minutes from the airport. Rates cover access to the water park’s facilities, meals at the main buffet restaurant, Asian restaurant, and snack bar, and local wine and international spirits. Rooms are clean and contemporary, albeit bland, outfitted with outdoor spaces, flat-screen TV’s, microwaves, and mini-fridges. Another pool, kids’ club, various sports facilities, simple spa and gym, and evening shows round out amenities. It's worth comparing rates with the more contemporary and better-maintained Village Heights Golf Course.

Scene

Bustling, dated property attracting lots of families with its water park

Families in particular are drawn to the Star Beach Village & Water Park for its sprawling beachfront water park that features attractions for all ages. Not only are there ample activities for kids, but daybeds by a DJ and a romantic beach setting attract adults. Being family-friendly makes it a little noisier by nature, and the loud dance music and foam parties may not suit everyone’s preferences. For those who enjoy a lively social vibe, however, this hotel has a fun atmosphere, and various facilities to keep everyone occupied. The complex is divided into two sections: reception, rooms, and main facilities are grouped into one section, while the extensive water park and beachfront, located across the street, compose the second section. Some public spaces have dated decor, though rooms have contemporary -- if simple and bland -- furnishings in neutral hues. The overall look is pleasant and bright. There's little evidence of local culture here, but it's a friendly spot for families.

Location

Split by the main road, a 30-minute drive from the airport

The hotel is located a 10-minute drive from the center of Hersonissos, where there are historic sights, a picturesque harbor, and several restaurants and bar. Next to Star Beach Village is a go-kart race track, plus there are a mini-golf across the street and supermarket a few minutes’ walk down the road. Malia is another city with a lively old town, set a 13-minute drive away. Heraklion International Airport is roughly a 30-minute taxi ride.

Rooms

Clean and pleasant rooms with fridges, microwaves, and furnished outdoor spaces

A comprehensive refurbishment completed in 2016 means all rooms are in good condition, with simple wood furniture and pleasant neutral tones. Two-tone simple wood furniture, brown and beige linens, and beige walls and floors are bland, though light-blue ceilings add some necessary contrast. All rooms have furnished outdoor spaces (some with sea views), mini-fridges, microwaves, tea- and coffee-making facilities, flat-screen TV’s with international channels, air-conditioning, wardrobes with safes, and free Wi-Fi. Clean bathrooms have shower/tub combos, wall-mounted hairdryers, and toiletries. Family Rooms have two separate sleeping areas, while Star Suites are located in the water park area, just a short distance to the beach, and come with extra amenities such as bathrobes, slippers, and welcome goods.

Features

Sprawling seafront water park, plus all-inclusive rates covering meals and drinks

Star Beach’s expansive water park is its main attraction, with countless facilities to suit those of all ages. A romantic beachfront with sunbeds and umbrellas, eight swimming pools, over 20 waterslides, various play areas, and game facilities ensure there’s plenty to do without leaving the park. Foam parties and occasional DJ entertainment appeal to adults. Two beach bars, one snack bar, a traditional Greek restaurant, shopping center, and even ATM machines are also in this area. All guests of the hotel stay on an all-inclusive basis, and get free access to the park, including the Greek restaurant (advanced booking required) and two of its bars. Water sports, such as parasailing and water-skiing, cost extra. The main hotel has its own set of facilities, consisting of an adult pool with separate kiddy pool -- offering afternoon dance music and hosted activities -- a poolside bar serving snacks, and main buffet restaurant with different themed nights and show cooking. An elegant Asian-themed a la carte restaurant is available as well, but it must be reserved in advance. The lobby bar has an afternoon coffee hour serving drinks and pastries. Local wine, international spirits, and beer are covered. Ample kids’ facilities include a kids’ club, mini football pitch, and basketball court. A basic gym has limited equipment, while the spa offers massage treatments, a sauna, steam room, and hot tub. Evening entertainment, such as traditional Cretan dance with live music, a magic show, and an international dance show, occurs a few times each week. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the property, and there’s free parking.
