Older and less luxurious than some nearby properties, Semiramis Village is a clean, no-frills hotel with fairly basic facilities. Set on a hill above Hersonissos bay, all the hotel’s 151 rooms have balconies, most with panoramic views, but the price for this pleasant setting is a fairly steep hike back up to the resort for guests who choose to visit the beaches below. There's a lovely saltwater pool and a restaurant which receives mixed reviews.
Scene
A mixed crowd of young adults and older couples who are drawn to the hotel's peaceful, yet central location
Seen from the main Hersonissos-Stalis road, Semiramis Village’s traditional Cretan style complex of white buildings glitter far above on a small hill overlooking Hersonissos bay. A brisk walk from sandy beaches and a short bus ride from Hersonissos’ shops, restaurants, and lively night scene, Semiramis Village hotel’s big draw is a large saltwater pool surrounded by free sun beds. There is a restaurant serving fairly basic Greek and Mediterranean cuisine to hotel guests, as well as a pool bar serving a limited range of drinks including wine, brandy and ouzo. Evening entertainment is scarce, however, so most older guests spend the day lazing on sun beds by the pool, or swimming from sandy beaches below the village, before heading for Stalis or Hersonissos to enjoy a wide range of entertainment activities, whilst younger guests head for party-central Mecca Malia a short drive further along the coast.
Location
On a small hill overlooking a peaceful strip of Hersonissos’ glittering, beach-lined bay
A brisk walk from lively Hersonissos on one side, and laid-back Stalis on the other, Semiramis Village hotel is about a 20-minute drive from Heraklion airport, whilst Spinalonga, the eponymous island featured in Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel, can be reached by boat from Elounda, which is a 30-minute drive away.Within walking distance of a string of sandy beaches, Semiramis Village hotel is also within easy reach of lively party-centric Mecca Malia, where younger guests can enjoy all night fun in a string of pubs and clubs.Limited elevator access means that higher floor rooms are not suitable for guests with mobility issues.
Rooms
Great views from most balconies, but basic interiors would benefit from refurbishment
Semiramis Village hotel’s 151 traditional Cretan style rooms graded as twin, double, and triple are scattered across the hillside above Hersonissos Bay. All rooms have satellite TV, hairdryers, bathrooms with showers (that tend to flood), and balconies with sea, partial sea, or garden views. Rooms are clean and fairly comfortable with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and safe boxes available at extra charge, but beds are hard and the no-frills fixtures and fittings are in urgent need of updating.Guests with mobility issues should know that, although the hotel is built on three levels, the elevator in the main building only reaches the first floor, which can mean a long climb of up to 100 steps with luggage to reach top floor rooms. Rooms close to the parking lot and bar areas can be noisy in high season.
Features
A large saltwater pool, plenty of free sun beds, and panoramic views from the balconies of seaview rooms
Semiramis’ large saltwater pool with stunning views over Hersonissos Bay is the natural focus of this fairly spread out resort and this is where guests tend to congregate in the daytime, whilst the poolside bar is popular for lunchtime snacks and evening drinks. The hotel’s spacious, but rather dimly lit, restaurant serves a basic buffet breakfast, along with lunchtime and evening meals to all-inclusive guests, and the cramped resident’s lounge has a satellite TV where guests gather to watch sports events. There is also a billiards table and a small library.More active guests tend to head for the tennis court or the rather poky gym to work out, whilst children can play ping pong and board games, or run wild in the designated play area.Semiramis Village hotel also has a massage room and small wellness area, but treatments must be booked in advance. Internet junkies should note that there is is an extra charge for Wi-Fi, which is only available in the hotel’s public areas.
