The complex is relaxed, and there are ocean views from many balconies and the pool deck. Families are catered to with a kids' pool and playground. Scene

Relaxed apart-hotel centered around its ocean-view pool

The Notos Hotel is a relaxed, family-run spot that attracts travelers who don't mind not being in the heart of Malia's nightlife scene. The aesthetic is simple and clean -- the exterior is tan stucco, with standard boxy architecture -- and the two blocks of buildings are set around the large and sunny stone pool deck, topped with blue loungers and umbrellas. The poolside cafe and bar is similarly relaxed and breezy, with three walls open to the elements and blonde wood furnishings throughout. In the high season, the pool deck is lined with partiers lazing away after a night out in Malia; in the off-season, the pool is lively with families and older couples. The panoramic sea views from the pool are especially impressive.

Location

On a steep hillside in the outskirts of Malia’s old town, a 20-minute hike from Malia’s vibrant nightlife

The Notos Hotel is located on a steep hillside above Malia, with water views from the pool area and many rooms. Malia's center -- with its cafes and famous nightlife -- is a 20-minute walk downhill (beware the uphill return). Sandy beaches and local cafes are somewhat closer, a 10-minute walk down to the water. Heraklion's international airport is a 20-minute drive from the hotel; free airport transfers are offered for guests staying a week or more. Other nearby sights include Spinalonga island and the Minoan ruins at Knossos. The hotel offers free parking.

Rooms

Basic apartment-style rooms with kitchenettes, balconies, and minimal decor -- some in need of refurbishment

Rooms at the Notos Hotel are all designed as basic apartments, with small kitchenettes and private balconies or terraces. All are clean and minimalist in style (if a bit odd in layout), with cool tile floors and blonde wood furnishings and little else, but many (especially those in the older block) could use some refurbishment. Some rooms have pool, sea, or countryside views, while others overlook trash cans or the parking lot. Kitchenettes are basic, but are equipped with the necessities. Bathrooms are similarly basic and clean, with cream stone tiles and combination shower/tubs; some have jetted tubs. All rooms have small flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi. All are also spacious, designed for groups and families, and the handful of bungalows can accommodate notably larger families. Rooms in the older block opposite the main building, away from the pool and pool bar, are less noisy in high season, but some rooms in this block are darker, smaller, and in need of updates.

Features

Sea-view pool with bar/restaurant, tennis court, outdoor game tables, and a kids' pool and playground

The Notos Hotel focuses on its large pool deck, lined with loungers and umbrellas. There's an adjacent pool bar and restaurant that serves drinks, basic meals, and snacks; there's a buffet breakfast for a fee. A small area with ping-pong and pool tables sit near the pool bar, and a tennis court next to the older block is available as well. There is also a children’s pool and playground with a limited selection of outdoor games. The hotel offers free Wi-Fi and parking, and cars can be rented through the concierge.
