A Greek-village-style property with mature gardens and three pools that's a steep climb from the attractions of lively Hersonissos, Marni Village’s range of studios and apartments are dark, and the decor is in dire need of a refresh. In a peaceful setting close to town, Marni Village is a good budget choice for those who like to lounge by the pool and enjoy the restaurants in the surrounding village of Koutouloufari, but that steep climb back from the beach and from Hersonissos might discourage anyone else without a car.
Scene
A friendly, Greek-village-style resort with three pools and basic accommodations, on a steep hill above the beaches and nightlife of Hersonissos
Although the grounds and pools of this Greek-village-style hotel have charm, rooms and apartments are dingy, badly soundproofed, and in need of some TLC. A steep hike up from the beaches and nightlife of bustling Hersonissos, this self-catering hotel attracts older couples who like to stay by the pool, or cost-conscious families and younger couples who can make that steep climb back from the beach.Rooms have kitchenettes, but for guests who don’t fancy cooking, there are three bars serving drinks and snacks on-site, while the restaurants, bars, and shops of Koutouloufari are within easy walking distance.
Location
Close to the shops and facilities of Koutouloufari, but a steep climb from the resort of Hersonissos
On a steep road on the outskirts of the lively resort of Hersonissos, Marni Village is a tough walk from Hersonissos’ beaches, cafes, restaurants, and attractions, but is within easy reach of the surrounding village of Koutouloufari. The hotel is also a half-hour's drive from Spinalonga, the eponymous island featured in Victoria Hislop’s best-selling novel, which can be reached by boat from the laid-back beach resort of Elounda. Other attractions within a 20-minute drive include the lively party mecca of Malia, and the fabled Minoan remains of Knossos.
Rooms
Rooms are dingy and in need of renovation; they have rock-hard beds but also kitchenettes.
Tiled and painted in shades of beige and brown, Marni Village's 117 apartments and suites have kitchenettes with two ring electric burners, small ovens, tea kettles, refrigerators, and basic cooking utensils. Three villas, each with its own private pool, have more luxurious facilities. Most rooms have balconies or terraces with pool or sea views. Rooms are poorly soundproofed, and noise travels from other rooms. Upper-floor rooms are quieter. Guests seeking peace and quiet should choose rooms away from the main pool areas, and guests wishing to avoid the steep climb should ask for a room below the reception area.
Features
Three large pools, a small children’s play area, and several bars
Although the connection is spotty, there is free Wi-Fi throughout the property, and most rooms are equipped with kitchenettes. Children’s services include a kids' club, a small outdoor play area, an activity room, and two designated pools. Adults can choose from three larger pools with plenty of sun loungers and parasols. There are also a game room with billiards table, a small sauna, and a tennis court, which comes with a fee. The main bar serves a range of meals and snacks.
