The family-owned hotel is like a Greek village, with one- or two-story complexes built with whitewashed stone around stone steps. Guests are greeted by cascading bougainvillea at the entrance, leading into a spacious common area. Simplistic and modern, the lobby has shiny gold wallpaper and several tan couches and white chairs. White, cream, and blue accents dominate the property, particularly in the large living room area; slip-covered furniture is arranged in clusters with stacking tables and beside lamps with red coral stems. The various spots for sitting are bright and relaxed -- a vibe felt throughout the hotel. Due to its romantic villas as well as children's pool and playground, the hotel attracts equal numbers of couples and families.

A huge draw of the Knossos is its location directly on the beach. Off a main road, the property sits on the northern coast of Crete, the largest of the Greek islands. It's about a 10-minute drive west to Heraklion International Airport, which also means airplanes fly overhead at the hotel, though most guests don't find it too problematic. The town of Heraklion has an array of eateries and shopping destinations, and its port is less than a 20-minute drive west as well. Ancient Greek archaeological finds are also close to the hotel. Parking at the hotel is both free and ample.

The 135 rooms at Knossos Beach Bungalows & Suites range from standard rooms to luxury villas, some with more modern furnishings than others. Though none of the units are super large, they all have balconies or patios overlooking the garden or ocean. The most economical rooms have twin or double beds, flat-screen TVs, and island-inspired decor. Bathrooms either have a bathtub or shower; suites have large walk-in glass showers as well as a private outdoor shower. Mini-fridges, air conditioner units, and floor-to-ceiling glass doors are the norm. Charges for in-room Wi-Fi and the safe lead some guests to feel nickel and dimed, though some suites and villas have free Wi-Fi or broadband Internet.

Vacationers at Knossos have access to two sandy and shallow beach areas with several sun loungers and umbrellas. Chic daybeds can also be rented. There are two outdoor swimming pools; a children's pool is adjacent to the main one. Guests can dine at Amvrosia, the hotel’s main restaurant serving contemporary buffet-style meals in a breezy area with panoramic windows and patio seating. The stylish, Swell eatery is run by Michelin Star awarded chef Ettore Botrini and has Greek-inspired cuisine. There are also separate lobby and pool bars, and the Beach Club serves snacks and fresh juice. All-inclusive or half-board packages are available.

Thanks to the Knossos' location on the water, visitors can windsurf or use paddle boats and canoes for free. Jet skiing and other water-based sports require a fee. Mini-golf and tennis courts are on hand as well, and a kids' club and playground help to keep the younger ones busy. A TV room is convenient for rainy days. A small but bright fitness center with a treadmill, strength training machines, and free weights is on-site, and massages can be booked for treatment rooms, the beach, or guest rooms.
