Direct access to a beach with crystalline waters is a big draw at the adult-only, upper-middle-range Grand Bay Beach Resort, as is being 10 minutes on foot from Kolymbari's calm fishing village. Removed from Chania's crowds farther down the coast, a secluded feel pervades throughout cool interiors, sea-facing outdoor spaces, and sleek pools. The 75 rooms are pleasantly outfitted, with furnished outdoor spaces and modern (if a bit underwhelming) decor, however , there are fees for safes and Wi-Fi. Two restaurants, indoor and pool bars, and a gym round out amenities, while the no-kids policy means a relaxing atmosphere. Also bordering the water, the Amalthia Beach Resort is a good family alternative.
Scene
Calm, adult-only resort with beachfront pools and terraces
Unobstructed Aegean Sea panoramas are blissful at this quiet, adult-only resort, where ocean-facing pools lead directly onto pebbly Kolymbari Beach. A crowd of mostly romancing couples come here for peace and quiet, and the outdoor spread of palm tree-flanked lawns, furnished terraces, and sea-view pools offer just that. Earth-toned wicker and leather seating isn't the most contemporary, but it has a beachy feel that's enhanced by marble floors and lots of windows. Sea-view terraces for the pool bar, buffet, and a la carte restaurant are great, and guests can dine right on the sand. Overall, this is a good pick for quiet-seeking couples who want to be close to the sea.
Location
Direct beach access, near Kolymbari's village
The hotel's serenity is largely in part to its somewhat isolated, but beautiful location. Directly on Kolymbari's pebble beach, shores here overlook deep blue waters against majestic mountain backdrops, and beach loungers and umbrellas are available (at a fee, depending on package). The fishing village of Kolymbari is a 10-minute walk. It has some tavernas, a pharmacy, supermarket, and ATM, although farther towns are best for more buzz. A bus stop outside runs to Chania and Platanias for great nightlife, plus Falassarna Beach. Allow up to 30 minutes by bus or car to all of the above. The 13th-century Gonia monastery is a 16-minute walk, and worth a visit, though note modest dress codes are required here. Chania International Airport is a 40-minute drive.
Rooms
Large, bright rooms with stylish touches and outdoor spaces
Facing pools, gardens, or the ocean (in upgraded categories), contemporary rooms with furnished balconies or terraces are bright, albeit a bit underwhelming. Tan-and-white walls, drapes, and wood furniture form neutral palettes amid crisp-white bedding, deep-brown suede headboards, and pale blue-green throw pillows. Upgraded units add colorful splashes with island-themed artwork. All rooms are a good size and Suites have living areas. Several room categories offer private use of a shared pool. Furnished outdoor spaces are more expansive in upgraded rooms with shaded verandas and loungers.
Phones, cable flat-screen TVs, desks, minibars, and AC come standard, although no kettles are offered, and both safes and Wi-Fi are at a fee. Straightforward bathrooms have shower/tub combos, array of quality toiletries, and hairdryers. All rooms benefit from reliable housekeeping.
Features
Multiple pools and terraces with fabulous ocean views, and two restaurants
Beach settings are why guests choose this property, and most features are oriented around the ocean. The pebble beach has loungers and umbrellas available for rent, or they're included in the ultra all-inclusive package. Ultra-inclusive packages also waive menu fees at the beach, and throw in beach massages, in-room Wi-Fi, and in-room minibars. The more popular standard all-inclusive package covers three meals, local alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, and snacks. The buffet restaurant serves Greek, Cretan, and international fare for all three meals, and local dancers liven up the place a few nights per week. The a la carte Azzuro restaurant has a menu of similar fare, but its banquet beach settings are more atmospheric. A pool bar and indoor bar are available.
The main infinity pool is a sleek, long affair with a separate kiddy section and built-in bar. It offers lovely ocean views and cushioned loungers. A bridge divides a second, river-like pool, where terra-cotta terraces offer more outdoor space. On the downside, there are no whirlpool or spa. The small, bright gym has a handful of cardio and weight-training machines, but equipment is old, and there are no free weights. The on-site mini-market sells essentials, and internet-connected PCs in the lobby are free to use. Parking across the street is free, and Wi-Fi is free in common areas.
