Elounda Water Park Residence Hotel

Set on a hill with gorgeous sea views, Elounda Water Park Residence is removed from the beach and town, but it offers a ton to keep guests occupied on-site. The family-friendly hotel's biggest feature is its 2017-opened water park, which has a lively atmosphere thanks to energetic dance music and playing children. The rest of the hotel remains remarkably quiet, though evening entertainment and some daytime activities keep things buzzing. Due to its location on a steep hill, navigating the grounds may be difficult for those with mobility issues. However, this also means beautiful views over Elounda’s bay and surrounding mountains are available throughout the hotel. Stone walls and pillars accented with wood create a pleasant rustic feel, and decor varies between modern and old-fashioned. Overall, this is a great option for families, but couples may be happier at the adults-only Elounda Heights, which is also on a hill.

Elounda Water Park Residence is in a somewhat isolated but pretty countryside location, up on a steep hill surrounded by large swathes of olive tree groves. The hotel provides a free shuttle to take guests to and from the main road. It’s a 15-minute walk into central Elounda, with its myriad restaurants, bars, and pretty marina, and about eight minutes farther to the beach. However, those walking should be aware that the walk back is up a steep hill, which may be difficult for some. The more traditional fishing village of Plaka is about a 15-minute drive, while the resort town Agios Nikolaos is a 20-minute drive away. Heraklion Airport is just over an hour's drive west.

Apartment-style rooms have lounge areas with kitchenettes, dining tables, and furnished terraces -- most of which overlook the sea. Decor varies between a bit dated and contemporary, though all largely have a neutral color scheme, simple wood furniture, and aqua bed runners and throw pillows. Many rooms add sofa beds. Minimally equipped kitchenettes come with tea- and coffee-making facilities, mini-fridges, and toasters, plus burners in some. Also standard are flat-screen TVs with free satellite channels, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Safes are provided but they require a fee. Modern bathrooms have showers or shower/tubs combos, along with toiletries. Two-bedroom apartments are available, as are upscale villas with private pools.

Opened in 2017, the on-site water park has quickly become a guest favorite. It offers two pools, waterslides, and a popular fun park, the latter of which requires a small fee and provides access to bouncy inflatables, electronic games, and sports facilities. The tranquil main pool is preferred by adults and couples, and has a separate deck with sunbeds and spectacular views. A poolside bar serves drinks until late, and the main buffet restaurant serves Greek and Mediterranean dishes, likewise with beautiful views of Elounda bay and the surrounding mountains. Half-board and all-inclusive plans are available, and the latter get free access to the themed Greek restaurant Argo Tavern. However, some past guests have complained of mediocre and repetitive food. 

Additional kid-friendly facilities consist of a kids’ club, indoor game room, and some themed entertainment. Some hosted recreation is provided, such as water exercise three times per week, along with evening entertainment that includes live Greek bouzouki music and traditional Cretan dance. A wellness center offers affordable massage treatments and a for-fee hot tub. A basic gym has dated and often broken equipment. The hotel provides free shuttle service every two hours to the main road linking to Elounda and beyond, and the ample private parking lots are free. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the hotel.
