Bottom Line

This 19-room budget hotel is popular for one reason: Elafonisi Beach. It is the last hotel on the road, so guests have easy access to the beach before and after peak tourist times. The hotel is family-owned and operated, and past guests often note the staff's Greek hospitality. Guest rooms are air-conditioned but basic in furnishings, lacking decor and amenities -- they have mini-fridges but lack TVs. Still, almost all have balconies or terraces with beautiful views of nature, either down to the sea or across the countryside. A taverna on-site also offers quality seafood served on a terrace. Travelers looking for a few more amenities may prefer the Glykeria Hotel and Restaurant, which has more polished rooms, a pool, and bar, but is farther from the beach.

Scene

Modest, family-run property with laid-back atmosphere

Elafonisi Resort by Kalomirakis Family attracts beachgoers that often stay just a couple of nights while enjoying the beach before continuing on to other parts of Crete. As it's name implies, it's owned and operated by a family that closely interacts with guests and receives praise for their hospitality. Stone walls, local flora, and a wrought-iron gateway lead up to the restaurant’s shaded porch and present a lovely, countryside feel. The porch acts as the dining area, featuring ladder-back chairs and plastic checkered tablecloths that give it a homey feeling. Throughout the rest of the hotel, style is lacking, however. All areas are functional and clean but without color or embellishment. The lobby is primarily white, with a few fishing artifacts and a small floral painting on the walls. Out back, stone pathways and stairs lead to bright-white stucco guest buildings throughout the olive grove. The buildings and pathways lack finishing touches but the natural, rustic environment can be appealing and provides a laid-back atmosphere.

Location

Easy access to Elafonisi Beach; far from other tourist sites

Elafonisi Resort is on the far western coast of Crete on a road leading to Elafonisi Beach. Past the hotel, it is a two-minute walk to a restaurant and a 10-minute walk to the beach. Heading inland, it's a three-minute walk to a mini-market and a restaurant serving fresh fish. The Chrysoskalitissa Monastery is a seven-minute drive north, for those interested in its history and beautiful views. Sun Set, a well-reviewed restaurant, is on the road just before the monastery.

Chania International Airport is an hour and 40-minute drive away. The nearest ferry from the mainland comes into Kissamos, which is an hour drive away. There are bus routes from major cities that will take travelers to the beach; the stop is a few minutes’ walk away. Elafonisi Resort has free outdoor parking for guests.

Rooms

Functional rooms with mini-fridge and kettles, but no TVs

As with the public areas of the hotel, rooms are basic and lack style. The rooms are either located above the tavern or in buildings spread throughout the olive grove. The design consists of either terra-cotta or beige tile floors, white walls with minimal nature-inspired artwork, wood tables and wardrobes, and white or earth-tone linens. Some rooms have kitchens; others share common spaces. One of the houses is rentable as a whole and is more appropriate for families with its three beds and a kitchen.

Standard amenities include mini-fridges, air-conditioning, and kettles, but there are no TVs. Almost all rooms have a terrace or balcony and many offer sea views. Small bathrooms generally include a pedestal sink, toilet, and shower stall, though there is not always a door to enclose the shower. Shampoo, hand soap, and hairdryers are provided.

Features

On-site restaurant and attentive owners, little else

Elafonisi Resort offers little in the way of extra amenities, but the owners are accommodating and can give advice on the area. The primary feature of the hotel is its easy access to Elafonisi Beach. Crowds arrive a bit before lunch and leave around dinner time, so early morning and evening visits are quiet and heavenly. There is an on-site taverna which is well-reviewed for its fresh fish dishes. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property, but the connection is not always strong.
