Bottom Line

Not much is going for this property despite its incredibly low rates. Nice property features include a small pool and an on-site bar and restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating, but rooms are drab and often dirty, with bare walls and dated decor. The entire property shows significant wear and tear, and many guests have complained about the limited options available with the all-inclusive packages.

Scene

Clubbing backpackers, European families, and young-at-heart couples who appreciate a budget hotel in a central location stay here.

At the heart of the lively beach resort of Hersonissos and close to some of the resort’s best beaches, this budget hotel is popular with a young party crowd, who come here for Hersonissos’ throbbing nightlife scene and the clubs and bars in Malia, a short drive away. Either side of the manic summer season, there are young-at-heart older couples and budget-conscious families from all over Europe, who come to relax at the pool during the daytime, and then congregate in the pool bar to dance or sing along to international hits blaring out from the hotel’s music player. The property layout is pretty simple: A garden gate leads from a side road into the hotel’s pool bar area, where there are two, rather tatty looking pool tables, and a big TV for sports and evening animations. This concrete area is dotted with sun beds surrounding a small pool, which is hedged in by the hotel’s four-story building. A flight of steps lead to the cool, dark bar and reception area. Next to the reception area there is a small, canteen-style restaurant serving basic Greek food and international snacks.

Location

On a quiet road close to Hersonissos’ sandy beaches, restaurants, and lively nightlife

Averinos is at the heart of lively Hersonissos, within walking distance of a string of sandy beaches and lively bars. It's also just over a 10-minute drive to the party mecca of Malia, and a 20-minute drive from Heraklion’s international airport. The fabled Minoan remains of Knossos are about a half-hour drive away. It's about an hour by care from Elounda, where boat rides depart to Spinalonga, the island featured in Victoria Hislop's bestselling novel.

Rooms

Barebones; most have balconies with pool views

Grouped around the main pool area, rooms, studios, and apartments have balconies or terraces; most of them overlook the pool. Decor is basic and rather drab, beds are hard and lumpy, and wiring and plumbing are rather eccentric. Bathrooms have walk-in showers and small, scratchy towels. Each room has a mini-fridge, but air-conditioning costs extra. Apartments also have kitchenettes with electric two-burner stovetops, cooking utensils, kettles, and coffeemakers. Guests seeking to escape the nightly noise from the pool bar should choose rooms on the upper floor.

Features

A medium-size pool, canteen-style restaurant, and proximity to Hersonissos’ multiple attractions

During the hot daylight hours guests who stay at Averinos drift from loungers around the pool to the pool bar and back again. In the evening, they gather in the pool bar where there is also a big satellite TV broadcasting live sport or karaoke tunes.Wi-Fi is free in the pool area and there is an Internet corner where a computer is available for a fee. Averinos’ canteen-style restaurant serves basic Greek food and international snacks, but most guests head next door to Hersonissos’ main street where there is a bewildering number of eateries to choose from.Since there are few problems of theft in this area, guests can rent small lockers in reception where they can leave valuables before heading for one of the sandy beaches that are about five minutes walk away.
