Away from the tourist hotels and lively strip of Platanes, the Apollon Hotel Apartments prides itself on showing visitors the "real" Crete. Decor throughout the property is basic, and visitors will find nearly everyone is there for the same reason: to relax and enjoy the sunshine, especially in the small but clean pool area and bar. There's little pretense here, just a friendly staff; basic decor of blue, white, and yellow inspired by the natural surroundings; and a lovely garden for peaceful relaxation.

A 10-minute walk from Platanes Beach and the tavernas, the Apollon Hotel Apartments are away from the main strip of Platanes on a quiet road, and surrounded primarily by homes. Rethymnon is about a 20-minute drive away and easily accessible via the local bus running late into the evening. On the way to the main strip, but closer to the hotel, is the popular restaurant Pagona's.

Decor is basic and dated, but perfectly clean and neat: white tile floors, green walls, multi-colored (thinning) bedspreads, and one pillow per narrow bed. TVs are tube-style -- no flat-screens here -- and in some rooms at a difficult angle to view from the beds. The apartments have free Wi-Fi and self-parking, though air-conditioning and safes are an extra per-day charge.
