Travelers to Crete seeking basic, clean accommodations near the sea may enjoy the budget Apollon Hotel Apartments. The 62 apartments have mini-fridges and dining tables, and the clean outdoor pool and poolside bar are popular. The main strip of Platanes and its beach are about a 10-minute walk away. Decor in both rooms and public spaces is minimalist and a bit dated, taking its inspiration from the natural surroundings and lovely, lush gardens of the property. Free extras include Wi-Fi and parking, but some amenities come at an extra cost, including breakfast, in-room safes, and air-conditioning.
Scene
Lovely garden and quiet location make for a peaceful stay
Away from the tourist hotels and lively strip of Platanes, the Apollon Hotel Apartments prides itself on showing visitors the "real" Crete. Decor throughout the property is basic, and visitors will find nearly everyone is there for the same reason: to relax and enjoy the sunshine, especially in the small but clean pool area and bar. There's little pretense here, just a friendly staff; basic decor of blue, white, and yellow inspired by the natural surroundings; and a lovely garden for peaceful relaxation.
Location
A 10-minute walk to restaurants, tavernas, and beach
A 10-minute walk from Platanes Beach and the tavernas, the Apollon Hotel Apartments are away from the main strip of Platanes on a quiet road, and surrounded primarily by homes. Rethymnon is about a 20-minute drive away and easily accessible via the local bus running late into the evening. On the way to the main strip, but closer to the hotel, is the popular restaurant Pagona's.
Rooms
Clean but dated and lacking seating options
The 62 rooms at Apollon Hotel Apartments are spacious and offer many home-style comforts, such as mini-fridges and small dining tables. Private balconies and hairdryers are welcome amenities, but the rooms lack one important feature: a sofa or comfortable chair. There are, however, kitchen table chairs. Decor is basic and dated, but perfectly clean and neat: white tile floors, green walls, multi-colored (thinning) bedspreads, and one pillow per narrow bed. TVs are tube-style -- no flat-screens here -- and in some rooms at a difficult angle to view from the beds. The apartments have free Wi-Fi and self-parking, though air-conditioning and safes are an extra per-day charge.
Features
Small but clean pool area, with a bar that stays open late
Apollon Hotel Apartments doesn't have many luxuries, but it does the basics very well. The highlight is the attractive and clean pool area and bar, which will stay open as late as 1 a.m. as long as there are customers. A small on-site shop sells the essentials -- a nice way to avoid the 10-minute walk to town. There's' also room service, but hours are limited.
