Bottom Line

The setting of this resort hotel is hard to fault -- it's in the picturesque southeast of Ireland and surrounded by extensive grounds and parkland. This restored 18th-century mansion provides a sense of history from its stately interiors to a variety of period touches scattered throughout. The golf course is the star of the show, but award-winning dining, and a well-equipped spa are also a draw. Some rooms are more special than others, and one or two show signs of wear, but all have decent amenities.

Scene

18th-century country mansion with rich heritage

Named after the castle dating back to 1177 that once stood on the same site, the Faithlegg House Hotel and Golf Resort is housed in a grand 18th-century country mansion originally built in 1783. Overlooking the estuary of the River Suir, the property is set in 200 acres of grounds and parkland, most of which make up the surrounding golf course. The reception area sets the tone of traditional grandeur, with marble columns, gilded mirrors, and a centerpiece crystal chandelier. Historical art and furnishings are scattered throughout the original building, blending into more up-to-date decor in the 1998 extension. The resort is obviously geared heavily towards golfers, while also providing plenty to do for families and golf widows.

Location

Set in the pretty southeast corner of Ireland, eight miles from Waterford

The Faithlegg House Hotel and Golf Resort is located in the picturesque southeast of Ireland, a 20-minute drive from the city of Waterford and 107 miles from Dublin. It’s surrounded by the rolling Irish countryside and close to the coast -- the scenic fishing of Dunmore East is located 15 minutes away by car. The nearest train station to the hotel is Plunkett Station, also about a 15-minute drive, while Rosslare Harbor is 53 miles away and has ferries to and from Wales.

Rooms

Accommodation ranges from simple, traditional rooms to self-catering houses

Standard rooms are decorated in a traditional fashion, with simple, light decor and antique-style wooden furnishings. Upscale rooms feature more sumptuous old-world interiors, as well as robes and slippers, while all have flat-screen TVs and tea and coffee facilities. Self-catering apartments and houses are also available with between one and four bedrooms, some with private gardens.

Features

Award-winning restaurant, large heated pool, and destination golf course

The hotel's main feature is the challenging 18-hole championship golf course surrounding the property. The spa offers a range of treatments together with a sauna, steam room, hot tub, and large heated indoor pool, though don't expect sleek contemporary ambience, its all rather on the homey side. Dining comes in the form of the AA Rosette winning restaurant, with an emphasis on locally-sourced ingredients served in very traditional surrounds overlooking the gardens. A relaxing lounge is also available, with fireplace and grand piano, for Afternoon Tea, while something stronger can be enjoyed in the adjoining bar. Outdoor tennis courts are also free to guests and there is a playground for kids.
