Set between three corporate parks, the 155-room Carlton Hotel Blanchardstown is a chain hotel aimed essentially at the business traveler. It manages, however, to break the mold with a mixture of bold design touches and efforts to cater to vacationing families. Its location isn't convenient for a Dublin city break, but it offers easy access to the airport, and a bus that stops right outside the hotel connects to the city center in about 30 minutes. Travelers might want to consider the similarly priced Dunboyne Castle Hotel & Spa, also on the northwest fringes of Dublin.
Scene
Upscale chain hotel pushing against the norm
It's clear some effort has gone into making the Carlton Hotel Blanchardstown stand out architecturally from the typical chain hotel. Opened in 2007, it bears all the hallmarks of a recent build, with contemporary curving frontage, large windows, and a mixture of wood and stone construct. This spirit of pushing a little beyond the norm continues inside, with a bordering-on-adventurous design scheme and a quirky yet inviting seating area in the lobby, with bright velvet banquettes and a bog oak sculpture centerpiece. Although fronted by a bland slab of car park, the property backs on to pleasantly arranged grounds with manicured lawns and plenty of lush vegetation. Because of its location near three corporate parks, the clientele is mainly business travelers during the week, but during weekends and holidays, the focus shifts more to tourist travelers.
Location
Set amid green fields and business parks northwest of Dublin
The Carlton Hotel Blanchardstown is situated between the Ballycoolin, Damastown, and Blanchardstown business parks, about eight miles from the city center. Largely surrounded by green fields, the hotel is connected to the rest of Dublin by new roads that also link to the M50, making the airport a 10- minute drive away. The National Aquatic Center is a few miles away, as is the woodlands and nature reserve of Tolka Valley Park. A bus stops outside the hotel that takes about 30 minutes to get to Dublin's city center.
Rooms
Eclectic decor meets mahogany furnishings
The 155 rooms are all decorated in a quirky and eclectic yet largely tasteful fashion, with patterned velvet upholstery, warm tones, and mahogany furnishings. Large mirrors dominate, adding to the feeling of space and light. Wall-mounted flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi are standard, while bathrooms are clean and contemporary with walk-in showers and tubs.
Features
Kids' club with healthy ethos
The on-site Time Restaurant offers a menu of cosmopolitan fare in colorful, modern surroundings overlooking the gardens, while the Hourglass Bar provides a bright and sparkling space for drinks. Families with kids can drop them with the Mini Explorers club, which emphasizes healthy food and activities. The hotel hosts corporate events, offering fully equipped meeting and conference facilities. There's a gym with cardio and weight-training machines on-site, as well as free parking.
