boutique hotel set on 28 acres of mountaintop terrain. The vibe is social and
villa-like with rooms ringing a free-form infinity pool that overlooks the stretching
mountains and valleys of the Guanacaste region and the distant Pacific. The
hotel is somewhat isolated, and requires a journey up a steep, rocky road to
access, but that's part of its appeal, especially to honeymooners and
romantics. It's a 20-minute drive to Tamarindo and the nearest beach, but
transportation is included in the all-inclusive room rate.

Los Altos de Eros is an adults-only, mostly all-inclusive
resort that caters to honeymooners and romantics, and that intention is evident
from the moment one steps into the lobby. Built in 2004, the hotel is essentially a large
villa, with an open-air lobby that contains reception, kitchen, dining, and
lounge under one roof. The atmosphere is casual yet refined with a style that's
both British Colonial and contemporary Costa Rican. Marble floors, thick round
columns, and vaulted ceilings with exposed wood beams mix with a collection of
wood and rattan furniture and generously sized sofas and chairs covered in
green and coral toned palm print fabric. A collection of provocative artwork –
sculptures of embracing couples and paintings of semi-nude women lounging – and
oversized, brightly colored paintings of Costa Rican flowers and palms put the
finishing touches on the airy space.The lobby flows directly out onto the terraced pool area which
seems to spill over the edge of the mountain. A sculpture of a nude woman in child's pose is centered at the front of the pool, serving as the border between lobby and outdoor terrace, while teak lounge chairs with plush ivory canvas cushions entice guests to settle in for the day. Guests move at a leisurely pace,
sipping wine and beverages from the continuously restocked bar, floating in the
pool, and conversing with other guests. The intimate nature of the hotel, which
includes communal meals and rooms that open directly to the pool, encourages guests
to interact. Those seeking privacy can retreat to their rooms, some which have
private terraces, or meander the stone paths to the spa for a couples massage
in a room overlooking the forest.

The hotels' six rooms are all within easy reach of the
amenities (wine, cookies, beverages) in the lobby and the pool. The second
floor of the hotel is dedicated to the Eros Suite, a large retreat with 17-foot
ceilings and an open floor plan that holds a living area with a sofa, a bedroom
nook with a king-sized bed, a huge jetted tub set on a pedestal-type landing, and a large crescent-shaped terrace that overlooks the
pool and the distant ocean.The hotel's other rooms are located on the first floor,
steps from the pool. The two (smallest) Poolside Queen Rooms feature queen-size beds and semi-private terraces that face the pool. The two Poolside King Rooms are slightly larger and feature two twin beds that can be fit together to
form a king-size bed or separated. The have private terraces that face the
mountain and additional windows, allowing for more natural light. The
hotel also has one Detached Suite located in a building near the pool. It
has a king-sized bed and a private covered terrace. Beds are topped with tailored,
taupe-colored coverlets and matching pillow shams along with crisp white
linens.The rooms follow the same design theme as the rest of the
hotel, featuring marble floors, exposed wood ceilings, and artwork that
reflects the romantic nature of the hotel. Windows are framed simply with white
linen treatments and the sliding doors that open to the pool are swathed in
thick curtains meant to darken the room and promote privacy. Bathrooms have
single vanities and outdoor showers that are separated from the interior space
by glass-block walls. Toiletries are stored in large canisters, holding mango-scented body lotion and spa-quality shampoo, conditioner, and body wash. The rooms
also feature flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning, safes, and robes.

From the lobby, a narrow stone path cut into the side of the mountainside leads guests into a lush forest that surrounds the resort's spa. The spa is surprisingly large for the size of the hotel, and its entry features a 20-foot cascading waterfall that finishes in a series of small pools. The spa holds five treatment rooms, including one with a rustic Balinese soaking tub, bamboo and teak walls and ceilings, and open-air vistas of the mountains and forest. The spa, which is open to outside guests, offers a variety of treatments and packages. There is also a small boutique that sells jewelry and clothing and an area for manicure and pedicures. In addition, the hotel offers morning yoga classes, scheduled hikes, and weekly cooking classes with the resident chef.The all-inclusive rates cover beer, wine, soft drinks, and daily breakfast and lunch. The breakfast includes items such as coffee, fruit, eggs, and French toast, while lunch dishes have local Costa Rican influence. A Saturday night dinner with roasted whole chickens and tenderloin is also part of the package, and guests can pay extra for the fixed three-course dinners on-site the rest of the week. For those who would rather dine in town, the hotel provides free transport and will pick guests up at a set time.
