The Conchal Hotel is a nine-room, budget-oriented boutique hotel with
lush gardens, colorful decor, and an attractive courtyard pool. Guests love the
personal service provided by the on-site hosts, the free continental breakfasts
featuring freshly baked breads, the tidy rooms, and the low rates. However, getting to the beach is more of a a
chore than a stroll, requiring a 5-minute walk along a busy road without sidewalks and a quick jaunt over a
precarious bridge before finally reaching the soft sand of Playa Brasilito.
Scene
A colorful, low-key oasis in the small, relatively undeveloped hamlet of Brasilito, a popular stop for guests traveling along the coast and those looking for an affordable off-the-beaten-track experience
Hotel Conchal is a tiny, colorful
oasis off a busy road that connects a string of popular resort destinations
along Costa Rica's Pacific Coast. Many guests use Conchal as a
stopover hotel as they travel along the coast while others choose the hotel solely for its low rates and authentic Costa Rican flair. The hotel is set in
Brasilito, a lively, rough-around-the edges town with local flair rather than a touristy vibe. The town is close to the more polished Playa
Flamingo and minutes from the immense, all-inclusive Westin Golf and Spa Resort
that accesses Playa Conchal, a lovely stretch of beach with a mix of sand and crushed seashells. Guests at the hotel can
access Playa Conchal by walking to the gray-sand Playa Brasilito, a less-traveled
stretch of shoreline that's popular with locals, and then continuing up the
shoreline over the small jetty of land that separates the two beaches. Excursions to the national parks as well as catamaran sails and horseback riding along the beach can be booked on-site through
Flying Banana Tours, but many guests prefer to venture off to explore on their own. Afternoons at the Conchal Hotel seem to be a sort of social hour with guests meeting up to discuss
their day while bobbing in the pool, sipping beers purchased at the nearby grocer, or partaking in the restaurant's happy hour specials.
Location
On a busy road across the street from an Alamo rental car office, a 5-minute walk to the beach, and 60-minute drive to the airport in Liberia
The hotel is located on a busy road in the small town of
Brasilito. Getting to the the nearest beach, Playa Brasilito, requires a
precarious 5-minute walk along the busy road. It's possible to access Playa
Conchal, known for its shells, by walking an additional 10 minutes along the
beach and around the hillside that separates the two areas. While Brasilito has
a few restaurants, guests will find a greater selection in Playa Flamingo and
Tamarindo. - Five-minute drive to the Reserva Conchal Golf Course
Rooms
Tidy, basic rooms with local artwork, air-conditioning, robes, water coolers, and mini-refrigerators
The hotel's nine rooms are set in three one- or two-story
buildings (painted red, turquoise, cobalt blue, and yellow) surrounding the
pool. Standard Rooms feature queen-size beds, Superior Rooms have king-sized
beds or one king and a sofa bed, and Twin Rooms have two double beds. The hotel
also has a Casita room located at the back of the property that can
accommodate up to six guests with one king-size bed and two double beds. The rooms are basic but immaculate, featuring taupe-colored
ceramic tile floors, metal-frame beds with extra pillows, white linens, and
white or beige coverlets topped with decorative floral throw pillows. Framed paintings
of nearby beaches such as Playa Brasilito and Playa Portrero hang above the
headboards, giving the rooms some local flair. Small, round bedside tables are
topped with tiny reading lamps, although the rooms still remain somewhat dim.
The ceilings feature exposed dark wood beams and ceiling fans. Desks offer room
to set up laptops to connect to the free Wi-Fi and closets with shuttered doors are finished with open shelving to store belongings. The rooms also come equipped with
mini-refrigerators, wall-mounted flat-screen TVs, safes, coffeemakers, water
coolers, and robes. Bathrooms are finished in terra cotta tiles with
single vanities and walk-in showers with wall-mounted soap dispensers. The
bathrooms lack toiletries such as shampoo and conditioner but they do come
equipped with hairdryers, an amenity not found in many budget Costa
Rican hotels. Outside, the rooms feature semi-private terraces with chairs and tables, offering peaks of the pool through a privacy screen of palms and flowering shrubs.
Features
A popular restaurant, bar, lounge, and reception area all under one roof overlooking the pool
Papaya's, Hotel Conchal's on-site restaurant,
is perched on the second floor of the Rancho building, overlooking the pool and
gardens. The restaurant specializes in freshly caught seafood, high-grade beef,
and vegetarian dishes, along with homemade desserts. Hotel guests start their
day with a continental breakfast that includes fresh-baked breads and cakes,
homemade preserves and marmalades, and fresh fruits and juices. The setting is
rustic and casual with thick dark wood tables, a tent-like corrugated roof, and
wrought-iron railings lined with bougainvillea. The space also holds a long
bar, which churns out two-for-one margaritias and other drink specials during
the daily happy hour, and a small lounge area and lobby where guests can relax, read,
and consult with staff members about local excursions.
