A one-minute walk from a secluded sandy cove, the mid-range Servigroup La Zenia offers an affordable, though dated, vacation in a quiet residential area. The hotel has an outdoor pool set in a sunny terrace with sea views, a kids’ club, and nightly live entertainment in the gaudy bar. Although the 220 rooms are sizable and come with flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and balconies, they're in need of a revamp and safes require a fee. Charges to access the gym and spa with indoor pool and sauna leaves guests feeling nickel-and-dimed. The buffet eatery receives high marks for variety and decent quality. It's worth comparing rates with Hotel Masa International, which is a bit more charming.
Scene
A large and dated hotel that attracts tourists looking for a simple vacation
The Servigroup La Zenia is unlikely to win any points for design due to interior spaces that are large, confused, and at times, gaudy. A green reception desk sits in a lobby decorated with stained glass, cream pleather armchairs, and a chandelier reflected in mirrored balconies. The low-ceilinged bar is similarly mismatched, with an extravagant Art Nouveau ceiling moulding by the bar, low leatherette seats, and row upon row of bridge tables under small flags. Fortunately, the outdoor spaces are far more attractive, with a geometric pool in a sunny terrace offering panoramic views of the Mediterranean. The hotel attracts a crowd who are willing to look past the tired decor to find a keenly priced, family-friendly beach resort.
Location
On a promontory between two sandy coves in a sleepy part of La Zenia
The hotel might be in a sleepy part of town, but it benefits from its seaside location as it's situated on a promontory between two sandy coves, Playa La Zenia and Cala Cerrada. It's a one- to two-minute walk to either beach. Farther afield, Zenia Boulevard shopping center is a four-minute drive away, plus there are a number of bars and restaurants nearby. Expect a 20-minute car ride to Murcia San Javier Airport, or approximately a 45-minute drive to Alicante Airport.
Rooms
Large but dated rooms with furnished balconies
The hotel’s rooms are spacious and cheerful, but undeniably dated. Expect mustard-yellow textured walls, chintzy floral bed linens, and an abundance of laminate wood. All, however, have furnished balconies or terraces, many of which overlook the sea. They have two double or twin-size beds, a desk and chair, and a chest of drawers doubling as a stand for a flat-screen TV. A mini-fridge and safe are also provided, thought the latter requires a fee. Wi-Fi is free but most guests report that the signal is unreliable in rooms. Bathrooms are similarly old-fashioned and fitted with either a shower/tub combo or shower stall, a bidet, hairdryer, and free toiletries. On the other hand, one suite is available, which is decorated with tasteful dark woods, walls painted to look like the bare concrete of a New York loft, and fabrics in a rich plum hue. The Oriol Suite has a separate lounge area with plushy white couches, a desk and chair, and a glass-topped coffee table. The bathroom comes with a jetted tub and separate shower cubicle.
Features
A long list of amenities aimed at all members of vacationing families
The hotel offers a solid list of amenities, though quite a few come at a cost. The spa offers a range of massage and wellness treatments, a small but decently equipped gym, an indoor pool, and sauna, but use of all of these facilities requires a fee. Use of the outdoor pool is free of charge, and it's set in a sunny terrace with a kiddy pool, ample loungers, and views of the Mediterranean. Meals are served buffet-style in the hotel’s cavernous restaurant, which can get noisy at times. Food receives good reviews for both variety and quality. Entertainment is available every night in the bar. A tennis court also serves as a soccer pitch and basketball court, while a kids’ club runs daily through high season. Wi-Fi is free, but it's only reliable around reception.
