This Best Western is a decent value for a central location across from the marina in downtown Corpus Christi, with a bar that has a nice view of the water. Other than the view from the bar and some of the guest rooms and a free breakfast, the pet-friendly, mid-range property is a bit tired-looking and stuck in the ‘70s, though it’s been undergoing some renovations. Some may be put off by the postage stamp-size pillows in the guest rooms. Travelers looking for something a little more modern might want to check out the nearby Omni, which has slightly higher rates.
Scene
Dated decor, with a nice view from the upstairs bar
The lobby is bright, spacious, and clean, but the decor is yawn-inducing. Old chairs with wild prints do nothing for the drab beige-tile floors, and there are plants scattered around that look like they belong in an office. The upstairs lounge is a bit nicer, with a pearlescent bar, though the white armchairs and other modern furniture clashes with the worn and busy carpeting and purple walls. It all competes with the view of the water, which is hard to beat. The rectangular pool with an old-fashioned rope marking off the deep end is pretty basic, but it provides a way to cool off in the Texas heat.
Location
Across from the marina in downtown Corpus Christi
The hotel is in the center of downtown Corpus Christi and directly across from the marina and the USS Lexington. It’s within walking distance of plenty of downtown restaurants. Whataburger Field, the home of the Minor League Corpus Christi Hooks, and the Art Museum of South Texas, is within a five-minute drive or a 25-minute walk. Corpus Christi International Airport can be reached in 15 minutes. Garage parking is free.
Rooms
Spacious, but in need of a refresh
The 173 King and Double Rooms are spacious and well-maintained but have the tired look of a property that hasn’t been updated in a few decades. There’s the worn rose-colored carpeting, drapes, and upholstery. The beds have small, square pillows. Smallish bathrooms aren't much better, with small vanities and curtained shower/tub combos with faux marble walls. Rooms come standard with large flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and microwaves, and some of the rooms have nice views of the ocean and nearby marina. The special Captain’s Quarters room looks like it could be used for a business meeting, with a long oval conference table and a wet bar, but has the same ‘70s look as the rest of the hotel.
Features
Cocktail lounge with lovely views, outdoor pool, and fitness center
The hotel has an 11th-floor cocktail lounge that’s open for the evening happy hour and the free breakfast, and has nice views of the water. There’s a small outdoor pool and a mid-size fitness center, along with a small corner that has a desktop computer and a printer. There’s free Wi-Fi throughout the property. Parking is free in a covered garage, though spaces are limited. Laundry facilities are available, and small pets are allowed. A rectangular-shaped rooftop pool provides city views and a place for kids to play. There are a few sun loungers flanking the water.
