The 75-room mid-range Pentire Hotel is located above Fistral Bay, near the town of Newquay on the Cornish coast. Basic and clean, but lacking character, the Pentire has a spa, beauty salon, indoor pool, and yoga studio, but the real draw is Fistral Beach, England's most famous surf spot. Guest rooms are small, but clean, bright, and comfortable, with coffee/tea facilities and flat-screen TVs. The hotel is a great practical choice for a beach holiday, with few frills, but enough to entertain guests on a rainy day. Families should also consider the Sands Resort Hotel & Spa, which includes a playground and outdoor pool.
Scene
A practical spot for beach and surf fans, with little style but potential for fun
The Pentire Hotel is geared toward surf and
beach enthusiasts visiting Fistral Beach. The hotel has plenty of free parking,
which is super-convenient for walking to the busy and popular beach area. The pale-yellow facade and unattractive front awning, complete with royal blue lettering, feels somewhat uninspired. Inside, the
vibe is far from opulent or glam; there are formica furnishings and red vinyl
armchairs in the lobby and lounge areas, as well as lots of busy wall-to-wall
carpeting -- some of it tartan -- but there's plenty of space for hanging out, playing pool or ping-pong, or enjoying a local beer. The sea views are obstructed by neighboring
houses, unless guests head to the roof, but there's no rooftop bar or sunset
viewing area. Runes Cafe and Terrace is pretty and bright, but the wooden terrace
borders the hotel’s parking lot. The Pentire frequently hosts large bus tours, but bachelor
parties are not welcome, and guests who are excited about the Newquay party
scene may want to stay closer to town. All in all, this is a very relaxed, practical hotel
that’s a good base for budget-conscious travelers looking to sample the best
waves in England.
Location
A short walk to Fistral Beach, in a peaceful residential area
The Pentire Hotel is located five minutes' drive or about 25 minutes' walk from the center of Newquay in a residential area between Fistral Beach and
Gannel Estuary. Fistral Beach is within about 10 minutes' walking distance, and the Pentire is
very convenient for surfers, as parking is difficult to find by the shore.
There are no shops or cafes in the immediate area, and guests who are
interested in the Newquay nightlife scene may want to stay closer to town.
Newquay Golf Course is a mile from the hotel, and the railway station is about a five-minute drive away.
Rooms
Small, clean, and bright, with modern bathrooms and simple decor
Rooms at the Pentire Hotel are small, but
clean and bright, with simple decor. Double, twin, single, and family rooms are
available; family rooms can be outfitted with bunk-beds. Some rooms on higher
floors have sea views. Guest rooms are decorated with dark-wood and brown-leather furnishings, along with fabrics and carpeting in beige, bold browns, or light seafoam green. All have coffee/tea facilities, flat-screen TVs, and hairdryers. Higher room categories have
small seating areas and both showers and tubs. Standard rooms have tiny shower
stalls. Adjoining rooms are available upon request.
Features
Indoor pool, spa, fitness studio, games room, and restaurant serving fresh local seafood
The Pentire Hotel has a games room with
ping-pong and pool tables, and a heated indoor pool, along with an aromatherapy-enhanced steam room. The fitness studio offers a schedule of yoga, pilates, and Qi Gong classes. The Powder Room offers a full menu of spa treatments,
including reflexology, Ayurveda, and sports massage, plus tanning and other beauty
treatments. There's a separate hair salon where guests can order up a blowout
or a new look. The Pentire’s restaurant serves a menu with fresh seafood
and local produce. Breakfast is cooked-to-order, and there's a set, three-course menu at dinnertime. The Dunes Bar serves coffee and cocktails, as well as local ciders and beers, in the bar area and on the terrace. The hotel has facilities for weddings, conferences of up to 100 people, private parties, and golf and surf breaks.
