Bottom Line

Gwel An Mor is an upscale resort with 61 Lodges and Residences by the sea in Cornwall. Guests can choose to stay in the cozy knotty-pine Lodges or in more modern, Scandinavian-chic Residences, all of which have full kitchens and views of the water from private terraces and balconies. With the beach a 10-minute walk away, and on-site features including a heated pool, spa, Mediterranean restaurant, and kids' activities, the resort is a wonderful choice for families seeking an active, outdoorsy holiday with all the comforts of home. However, it's in a bit of a dull area, with little action in the immediate surroundings.

Scene

Family-friendly resort with lawns and gardens overlooking the sea

Gwel an Mor is situated about a 10 minutes' walk from the beach, and has views of the water throughout its bucolic grounds. Eco-friendly knotty-pine Lodges and minimalist wood Residences dot the property, and stone walkways and roads wind past green lawns lined with nicely landscaped gardens. The lobby is playful and simple, with a knotty-pine ceiling and a dark-brown leather couch, beside which are a croquet set and a plush toy horse. The front desk has a sea-inspired turquoise panel stretching across its length. There's a parking lot outside the reception building, which also houses the pool, gym, and spa and is fronted by neatly kept shrubs and flowering plants. The Terrace restaurant is located inside a wooden lodge-style building with pitched roofs and a large deck lined with a few spiky palm trees. Guests are mainly families looking for outdoor adventures, which are readily available -- there are even cycling trails that begin on the property.

Location

Tranquil and natural resort by the seaside in Cornwall

The resort is situated on a quiet road removed from any commercial activity. The nearest town is Portreath, where there are a handful of restaurants and bars -- both Portreath village and the beach are about a 10-minute walk from the property. Godrevy Beach, where guests can go surfing, is about a 10-minute drive away. Woodland walks are on offer at Tehidy Country Park, and the entrance is just a couple minutes' walk away. Cornwall is about 45 minutes by car on the A30 freeway.

Rooms

Cozy Lodges and modern Residences, all with full kitchens and terraces overlooking the sea

Options include homey, knotty-pine Lodges and sleek Residences. All have sea views, living rooms, terraces, free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, fully equipped kitchens with modern appliances, and washer/dryers. The Lowena Lodges are the smallest options, and each includes a master bedroom with an attached bathroom and a sitting area, twin bedroom, and main bathroom with a wood-paneled shower/tub combo. Decor is simple and clean and includes deep-pink fabric and dark-brown leather couches, crisp white bedding, and simple wood furniture. Trega VIP Lodges have TVs in the master bedrooms, barbecues, daily maid service, log fireplaces, and private hot tubs. Residences are more modern and sleek, each with an open-layout and luxuries such as heated floors, mood lighting, and larger decks.

Features

Outdoor fun and wildlife, spa with beauty treatments, Mediterranean restaurant, and heated pool

The Clubhouse has a heated pool and hot tub, and also houses the Wellbeing Health and Beauty Spa, which has a sauna and steam room and offers massages and beauty treatments using marine-inspired products. There's an outdoor kids' area that includes a wooden playground, and other kids activities are organized and held outside on the grounds. Guests can play tennis or croquet, practice putting, and stroll around the grassy property. Feadon Farm, a wildlife education center, is right next door to the Lodges, and guests can hand-feed foxes or get up close to reindeer and badgers.  The Terrace serves Mediterranean food, including tapas, seafood, and local Cornish produce; there's a lengthy wine list, and take-away is available. Wi-Fi and parking are free. Bike rentals are available, and trails begin on the grounds.
