Bottom Line

The mid-range Best Western Porth Veor Manor Hotel has an
enviable location atop a hill overlooking Newquay Bay. Lusty Glaze Beach is a brief walk through the quiet countryside, but the hotel is somewhat
isolated, about five minutes' drive outside Newquay. The stately 19th-century
manor features a glass-enclosed, plant-filled conservatory that houses a
portion of the restaurant and bar. Features include a heated outdoor pool, free breakfast, and free Wi-Fi and parking. The 18 rooms are clean and comfortable but a bit drab and dated, although some have sea views. Families might want to check out Sands Resort Hotel &
Spa, which (typically) offers comparable rates and has more amenities including a spa, golf course,
and two pools.

Scene

A quiet seaside manor that emphasizes views and relaxation

This quiet, seaside manor on a hill overlooking Newquay Bay
hosts some business travelers, but it’s mostly couples and families who seek a
relaxing stay as they take in the ocean breezes. The stately 19th-century stone manor has been updated, but it still showcases original features
such as the winding staircase that leads to the guest rooms on the top two
floors. Its wrought-iron banister is painted green, while a classic grandfather clock and a green leather sofa sit below in the lobby. Attractive beige
tile covers the interior floors and front deck, and accents some walls, lending a high-quality feel to the property. Part of the restaurant and bar are in a lovely glass-enclosed conservatory that has
large tropical plants and wicker furniture.
The sunny space overlooks the expansive lawn, outdoor pool, and gently rolling hills that
lead to the bay.

Location

On a hill overlooking Lusty Glaze Beach, about five minutes outside Newquay

The hotel is situated on a hill overlooking Newquay Bay, about five minutes' drive northeast of Newquay’s attractions,
beaches, and train station. It’s a five-minute walk
from the manor down a private path to the Lusty Glaze Beach, or 10 minutes on foot to
Porth Beach. A couple of cafes are within five to 10 minutes on foot, but the hotel
is fairly isolated from most area shops and restaurants. The Newquay Zoo is six
minutes away by car, and the Newquay Golf Club and Newquay Cornwall Airport are
approximately 10 minutes away.

Rooms

Clean and spacious, with nice views, coffeemakers, and free Wi-Fi

Guest rooms are simple and plain, but a touch drab and dated on the whole. Decor features royal blue blankets and throw pillows accenting white bedspreads, cream-colored walls, and solid-green carpet and drapes. Homey pine-wood furniture includes armoires and desks, as well as dressers topped with small flat-screen TVs and coffee/tea facilities. Rooms come in pool or sea view options, and both afford lovely views. Standard Double rooms in the manor have one double or two twin-size beds. Standard Family rooms share the same decor, but add bunk beds.
Superior rooms have more space and king-size beds, as well as more modern wood
furniture, crimson-tone accents, and robes. Bathrooms are brighter and somewhat more attractive than rooms themselves, with white marble-tile walls and white ceramic basins or pedestal sinks with classic fixtures. Some have walk-in
showers with clear glass doors, while others have shower/tub combos with partial walls of clear
glass. Some have rainfall showerheads, and all have heated
towel racks. Free Wi-Fi come standard. Be aware that there's no elevator to rooms, all of which are on the top two floors of the building.

Features

Free breakfast, restaurant/bar, outdoor heated pool, large lawn with putting green, and beach access

Amenities are somewhat lacking here compared to resort-like properties in the area, but the low-energy setting is part of the charm for some guests. Porth Veor Manor does have a full-service
restaurant serving free continental breakfast (hot menu items can be
purchased), and locally sourced dishes for lunch and dinner. Afternoon tea is served, and outdoor seating on
a spacious stone patio is available. The conservatory bar is full service. The outdoor pool is heated and has many sun beds. A lovely area surrounding the pool is sheltered from the wind, but the pool itself is a bit small. The large, flat lawn overlooking the beach has a practice putting area and is also used for weddings. A private path leads down to Lusty Glaze Beach, a five-minute walk away. There's meeting space for up to 60 people, and a computer station with Internet access is available to guests. Board games are on loan in the lobby, and a small display case there has jewelry, dolls, and other gifts for sale. Parking is free as is Wi-Fi. Some guests have reported issues
with cell phone service. No
pets other than service animals are allowed in this nonsmoking
property.
