Bottom Line

The 79-room SaGa Hotel is one of the more budget-friendly non-hostel options in central Copenhagen. It's situated right on the edge of the trendy Vesterbro neighborhood, a two-minute walk to the main train station and a five-minute walk to Tivoli. Rooms can accommodate one to five guests and are available with either shared or private bathrooms. All include LCD TVs and free Wi-Fi, but there's no air-conditioning and guests have complained about thin walls. The hotel's reception desk doubles as a small bar, a daily breakfast is available for an extra fee, and the hotel rents bikes and has self-service laundry facilities. Travelers might want to also check out SaGa's main competitor, the nearby Nebo Hotel, which has slightly lower rates but has no bar area.

Scene

Basic, budget-friendly hotel with private rooms and shared bathrooms

The SaGa Hotel is set in a nice five-story white concrete and red-brick building. The lobby, with gray wall-to-wall carpeting, red vinyl couches, white walls, and paneled ceilings, and a wall of brochures provides a functional place for guests to gather and plan their day. A wood reception desk doubles as a spot for ordering coffee and beer, while a second room includes several more seating, a few bar stools, and a computer station for guests' use. The hotel is popular with budget travelers -- especially couples, families, and solo travelers -- who want to stay right in the city.

Location

Convenient location in trendy Vesterbro area, a two-minute walk to Copenhagen’s main train station

The SaGa hotel is conveniently located near the border of Copenhagen’s trendy Vesterbro district, an up-and-coming area filled with shops, restaurants, bars, and other hotels -- though some guests find the area right around the hotel a little seedy at night. SaGa itself sits on a side street a block from the main drag. It's a two-minute walk from Copenhagen's Central Station (Kobenhaven H), which connects to most major sights within 20 minutes. The train station also offers easy transport to Copenhagen Airport (30 minutes) along with regional train service to other national and international destinations. Guests can walk to popular attractions such as Tivoli (five-minute walk), Tyco Brahe Planetarium (seven-minute walk), and the National Museum of Denmark (15-minute walk).

Rooms

Basic, functional rooms for one to five guests -- but some bathrooms are shared and walls are thin

The Saga's 79 rooms are small and aimed at the basics. Half the rooms share bathrooms, but all rooms are private, making this hotel a step up from dorm-style hostels. Single, Double, and Family Rooms (the later of which can accommodate three to five guests) are all available as either Standard Rooms (with in-room sinks and shared bathroom facilities) or Superior Rooms with en-suite bathrooms (including showers and toilets).Decor is plain and functional. Rooms might have blue wall-to-wall carpeting, white walls, and burnt-orange drapes and bedding, and small tables with chairs acting as desks. Other in-room amenities include 26-inch LCD TVs, small wardrobes, and free Wi-Fi. Beds get mixed reviews, but most guests find the rooms adequately clean. Rooms either face the street or courtyard. Guests do complain about thin walls, so light sleepers should consider bringing earplugs. There is no air-conditioning, coffee/tea service, or mini-fridges. Towels are provided, as are dispensers with basic toiletries. En-suite bathrooms include hairdryers. Shared bathrooms include wet-room style showers and separate rooms with toilets and sinks.

Features

Lobby with small bar, daily breakfast buffet (extra fee), laundry, and bike rentals

As a budget property, the SaGa Hotel has limited features. The lobby is the main common space, and it includes sitting areas and a TV, a reception desk with a small bar serving alcohol, drinks, and coffee, a computer for guests' use, and small gift shop items for sale. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel. The front desk is open 24-hours and staff can assist with luggage storage, recommendations, and car rentals. Three-gear bikes with locks and baskets can be rented on-site. The hotel serves a daily breakfast with a standard cold spread (cereal, pastries, cold meat, toast, and fruit) and coffee, for an extra fee. For guests traveling with children, cribs and high chairs are available. Self-service laundry, including two washing machines and a dryer, are also available for guests' use.
