Youthful party vibe might not appeal to all guests
Popular with young budget travelers, the Generator is a modern, trendy, and -- perhaps most important for its guests -- affordable hostel in the heart of the tourist area. Rooms range from dorms with shared bathrooms to private rooms with en-suite bathrooms. They are basic but clean and stylish. Hostel life centers on a big chill-out area with lots of plush seating and extras such as foosball, a pool table, and even a photo booth. That said, the hostel has a bit of a party atmosphere -- travelers in search of something more subdued might want to look elsewhere.
Scene
Bright, modern hostel with fun, youthful atmosphere
The atmosphere of the hostel is fresh, young, and modern. The small lobby has graffiti-style artwork covering its walls and an industrial-style staircase leads up to the reception area. Beyond reception is a large rooftop terrace, a bar, and a chill-out area with plush seating. Hallways dimly illuminated by stylish colored lighting, and more graffiti-style artwork, lead to the rooms. The Generator is geared toward young travelers, backpackers, groups of friends, and couples on a budget.
Location
On a quiet street in the main tourist area
The Generator is on a relatively quiet street right in the heart of the tourist area, and there are plenty of restaurants, cafes, bars, and shops nearby. Rosenborg Castle Gardens is a couple of minutes away by foot, as is the old part of town, with its little cobbled streets and cute boutiques. The huge King’s New Square, a major transport hub, is a five-minute walk away. The airport is within a 20-minute drive, and can also be reached on Line 2 of the metro in the same amount of time.
Rooms
Dorms and private rooms with en-suite bathrooms
The Generator is a hostel, but while beds in the dorm rooms are the least-expensive available, there are also twin rooms and private rooms with en-suite bathrooms available. Those in the dorms share bathrooms -- each floor has a shower. Rooms have a simple, almost stark decor, with the sleek finishes so identified with Scandinavian design. White walls are offset by brightly colored accent walls, and gray drapes and lamps.
Features
Chill-out lounge with seating and pool table, plus library, bar, and bike rental
The hostel's main feature is its chill-out lounge, which has lots of natural light pouring in from big picture windows, sleek, modern design with wooden-plank accent walls, plenty of seating, a photo booth, a foosball table, and a pool table. Off to one side is a library with computer stations and lots of books. There's a huge rooftop terrace, and an on-site Petanque Bar that serves pub fare, including burgers, nachos, pizza, and pasta, as well as cocktails. Bicycles can be rented from the front desk, and there's a daily free walking tour. The hostel also offers luggage storage in coin-operated lockers, laundry facilities, and vending machines. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
