Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Danhostel Copenhagen City has a hotel design in the public areas, but a hostel vibe. There are a whopping 192 dorms with en-suite bathrooms and private rooms with no amenities beyond free Wi-Fi spread out over 16 floors. Centrally located, the hostel is within a 20-minute walk or less to most Copenhagen tourist attractions and is cheaper than many hotels in the city, even if you don’t get that much for what you pay for. For instance, a cold breakfast costs a fee, as do hairdryers, the laundry room, and bike rentals. Be prepared to make your own bed on arrival. Generator Copenhagen offers a true hostel atmosphere with a modern design and cheaper prices.

Danhostel Copenhagen City

Scene

Modern hostel with a busy atmosphere, lively bar, and do-it-yourself policies

It’s a bit confusing that Danhostel Copenhagen City advertises itself as a “five-star design hostel” providing a “luxury stay at a low cost.” Let’s be clear -- that’s not really the case. Yes, the hotel itself is modern with minimalistic interiors. The lobby has cream floors and dark accents in the reception desk which looks very smart. For that matter, the bar and breakfast area has charming blue '60s-style chairs, interesting art on the walls, and a stylish blue-tiled bar. And while it’s modern and clean, it’s not luxurious in terms of design or service. Upon arriving, the lobby is generally busy with solo travelers and large groups, all vying for the often full luggage storage. Access to the elevator by key card is a nice little touch to ensure safety. However, it’s things like having to make and unmake your own bunk bed, no toiletries (even in private rooms), and a lack of air-conditioning in all rooms, that clearly doesn’t scream “five-pearl.” So, see it as it is -- a budget hotel and hostel with a nice design and a laid-back atmosphere, especially in the bar where live music is available on some nights and budget-minded guests from families to couples to solo travelers kick back or interact.

Location

Next to the Port of Copenhagen and within a 20-minute walk to many of Copenhagen's attractions

Danhostel Copenhagen City sits right next to the Port of Copenhagen on the edge of Copenhagen’s center. It’s about an eight-minute walk to dining options and a two-minute walk to a bus stop. There’s a good mix of attractions within walking distance like the Tivoli Gardens (a nine-minute walk away) and the Christiansborg Palace (a 12-minute walk from the hotel). Plan on about a 15-minute walk to the pedestrian shopping street of Strøget. Even the Copenhagen Cathedral only takes 18 minutes to reach on foot. The closest train station is an 11-minute walk away and it’s a 17-minute drive to Copenhagen Airport.

Rooms

Dorms and private rooms with en-suite bathrooms and free Wi-Fi

This hostel offers a variety of room options, from private rooms with a mix of regular and bunk beds to full-on dorm rooms. Rooms are spartan in decor with wood floors and little furniture beyond the simple beds and black desks or tables with chairs. The white walls are made less boring with black and white photography in some rooms. There’s not many features available in dorms or private rooms. That means no air-conditioning, safes, kettles, flat-screen TVs, or mini-fridges. Dormitories have lockers (padlocks can be rented from the front desk), as well as free Wi-Fi, which can also be found in private rooms. Beds and towels are included, but guests must make their bed upon arrival and return it to the lobby area upon leaving. All rooms have en-suite bathrooms that are functional, but reportedly not always clean. Toiletries are not available in rooms and hairdryers must be rented from the front desk for a fee. Rooms on the upper-level floors have great city and Tivoli Garden views.

Features

Few freebies available with the bar and cold breakfast as the main highlights

You won’t find a lot of freebies at this budget hotel beyond a public kitchen, guided city walks, and a kids’ play room. The cold breakfast buffet costs a fee (though is half off for kids under 12), while snacks like sandwiches and pizza can be ordered from the bar throughout the day and drinks at night. Vending machines are available for those late-night cravings, though guests can’t take the food or drink to their rooms. Occasional events are held here, like DJ sets or brunch. There are a few things for rent like bikes and a laundry room (both for fees). Wi-Fi is free throughout and discounted parking is available nearby.
