Bottom Line

Located about a 20-minute walk from the city center, the Avenue Hotel Copenhagen is a 68-room, upper-middle-range boutique hotel that makes for a refreshing alternative to properties in more touristy areas. With soft, neutral colors, high-end Missoni fabric accents, and cozy couches, the decor is stylish, modern, and welcoming, and highlights the work of Danish designers. Rooms are tastefully decorated and come with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and free Wi-Fi, but they don’t have AC and can get street noise. There’s a comfortable on-site bar, lounge, and outdoor terrace filled with soft couches and homey extras like books, games, and a children’s play area. Guests rave about the free breakfast buffet and take advantage of the on-site bike rentals. There are special amenities for kids and pets (though pets cost an extra fee). Travelers looking for something a bit more central could try the Andersen Hotel Copenhagen.

Scene

Stylish, modern, and welcoming decor featuring Danish designers and Missoni fabrics

The Avenue Hotel Copenhagen is situated in a beautiful 1899 brick building designed by Emil Blichfeldt, who also designed the entrance to Tivoli. Elegant and adorned with fanciful elements, the building features bay windows, turrets, and beautiful molded and concrete details such as sculptural busts and flowers standing out in relief. Inside, the lobby is modern yet homey with white walls, beautiful wood floors, and slouchy brown velour couches. The pewter front desk adds a chic eclectic flash and is outfitted with tufted black leather panels and finished with overhead pendant lights. Throughout, the hotel is decorated with pieces from popular Danish designers like Georg Jensen, with many of these products also available in the on-site boutique shop. Photos from Danish photographers grace the walls while neutral, striped, and patterned Missoni fabrics appear here and there as accent pieces. Business guests, families, and tourists who want to stay slightly outside of the city center would all feel at home here. Pets and children are also more than welcome.

Location

Outside of the tourist area, about a 20 minute walk to the city center

The Avenue Hotel is located on a main road in the Fredriksberg area of Copenhagen, about a 20 minute walk from the city center. Guests agree that they feel more like a local in this area, and generally choose the hotel partially to be away from the hustle and bustle of the touristy spots. There’s plenty nearby, including a plethora of public transportation, restaurants, and shops all within easy walking distance from the hotel. Bikes are available to rent directly from the hotel, and guests with cars can park on-site, though parking costs an extra daily fee.- One-minute walk to nearest bus stop (Blågårdsgade)

Rooms

Stylish tasteful decor with mini-fridges and free Wi-Fi, but no AC

Rooms at the Avenue Hotel are simple and modern with tasteful, stylish decor in neutral colors. Like most hotels in Copenhagen, the rooms are fairly small and compact -- though actually somewhat more spacious than ones you might find in the city center. The Standard Double has neutral white walls, a drum pendant light, a white armchair, a striped Missoni bed coverlet in sandy colors, and nightstands with swing-arm lamps. The wall-mounted flat-screen TV sits over a thin desk with a leather chair, while the wardrobe includes a safe and a mini-fridge. Bathrooms are fully tiled in white with black floors and feature large vanity mirrors, wet-room style showers, hairdryers, and Orla Kiely toiletries. All rooms also come with free Wi-Fi. Irons and ironing boards are available upon request. There's no in-room coffee or tea facilities, and no air-conditioning. Rooms that face the main road can get street noise, so light sleepers should bring earplugs. And a few guests complain that furniture shows signs of wear and tear, though most find the rooms comfortable, clean, and stylish.

Features

Cozy bar, lounge, and outdoor patio; delicious breakfast buffet; kid- and pet-friendly amenities; boutique gift shop

A highlight of the Avenue is its common areas, which include a stylish lounge with cozy couches and a fireplace. Similarly cozy is the on-site bar that has couches grouped together around rugs and tables to create a homey atmosphere. Photographs on the walls, stocked bookshelves, and games, like a wooden chessboard, add to the ambiance. An outdoor courtyard offers slouchy couches, greenery, and space heaters on a deck-like patio. The free breakfast buffet is served in a stylish room with wood floors and tables, circular pendant lights, and brown chairs. Guests say the room can get crowded in the morning, but they rave about the buffet, which serves up homemade bread, pastries, and jams, along with cold cuts, cereal, hot chocolate, dried fruit, and nuts. To-go breakfast is available upon request. The lobby has a Mac desktop computer and printer for guests and offers free newspapers. There are two on-site meeting rooms, one for up to eight guests and the other for up to 50, which are stylish and feature natural light, wood floors and tables, and brown leather chairs. Meeting rooms come equipped with LCD projectors, screens, and white boards. There is an on-site boutique gift shop full of Danish design items, jewelry, and other accessories, many of which are also found around the hotel as decor. The hotel also hosts a variety of special events. Past events included a stylish “Pop-Up Shop” that showcased the wares of up-and-coming Danish designers. They host regular high tea and even DJs who play classical music in the lounge. Children are welcomed at the Avenue Hotel with a toy. A small space just for kids off of the breakfast area and an outdoor sandbox offer kids places to play. Babysitting can also be arranged. Pets are also welcome (though they cost an extra fee) and are treated with a special bowl and pillow. On-site parking is available but costs extra. Guests can rent bikes from the hotel, including smaller bikes for kids ages 8 to 14. The front desk is open 24 hours. Dry cleaning and laundry services and currency exchange are available. There are no on-site fitness facilities, nor is there an on-site restaurant for lunch or dinner, but several are in walking distance.
