Metropole Suisse Hotel
Piazza Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour 19

The 71-room Metropole Suisse Hotel is a mid-range option on Piazza Cavour, next to Lake Como. Location is the primary draw here, not only for the panoramic lake views, but also for the restaurants, shops, and public transport within a few minutes' walk. There's a restaurant and bar, though eating in town may be a better bet, as the quality is hit or miss and it's pricey. The best rooms have private balconies with views of the mountains and lake, though decor is inconsistent and some rooms have dated carpets and upholstery. Overall, this hotel is fine for travelers seeking a convenient, in-town location near the train and ferry, but for something more stylish, the nearby Albergo Terminus Hotel has similar rates that include free breakfast.

Hotel Villa Flori
Via Cernobbio 12

Hotel Villa Flori is an upscale boutique hotel located on the western shores of Lake Como, between Como and Cernobbio. It's housed in a 19th-century villa with charming Old World interiors and exquisite lake views (the highlight for most guests). The 53 guest rooms and suites are elegantly furnished and come with minibars, free Wi-Fi, and beautiful lake views -- some have private balconies. A free buffet breakfast is served each morning, with lunches and dinners available in Restaurant Raimondi and drinks and light snacks in the Lounge Bar. There's a small spa in the attic with a sauna, Turkish bath, solarium, and limited selection of fitness equipment. Travelers may also consider Albergo Terminus Hotel for more affordable rates and similar features, but less impressive decor.

Albergo Terminus Hotel
Lungolario Trieste 14

This is one of the only upscale properties in Como, and is located right across from the lake and within walking distance of the Duomo. It's housed in an early 19th-century property and has 40 elegantly furnished rooms, featuring wooden floors and tall ceilings; some have lake views. Certain rooms have older-looking furnishings and unattractive views. Features include an Italian restaurant, seasonal terrace, free breakfast in the morning, a fitness center, a sauna, and bicycle rentals. Overall, the decor here is more impressive than at the nearby and also upscale Metropole Suisse, but rates here tend to be a bit higher.

Borgovico Hotel
Via Borgo Vico 91

The 13-room Borgovico Hotel is a charming, three-pearl 19th-century property within walking distance of the Como Cathedral, Lake Como, and Como San Giovanni train station. Breakfast is served in a citrus-colored dining room, which has a cafe/bar. There's also a cozy courtyard with additional seating. Iron bed frames, exposed wooden ceiling beams, and brick walls add character to select rooms, which include flat-screen TVs, safes, and free Wi-Fi. While charming and homey, rooms do not overlook the lake. Borgo Antico Hotel is a comparable option nearby, so it's worth comparing rates.

B&B Hotel Como
Via Pasquale Paoli 21

The 84-room B&B Hotel Como is a contemporary, budget-friendly property, located about a 10-minute drive from the sites and lake of Como, Italy. The hotel offers the basics guests need -- a clean place to sleep -- but little else. No-frills rooms are contemporary and include flat-screen TVs, safes, and hairdryers, but they lack mini-fridges. Breakfast is available in the lobby, but not included in room rates (despite the B&B tag). The hotel is pet-friendly, and free parking and fast Wi-Fi are nice perks. For a spot closer to the lake and surrounding city, check out the Best Western Continental at a similar price, an eight-minute walk from the pier.

Hotel Barchetta Excelsior
Piazza Camillo Benso Conte di Cavour 1

The modern three-pearl Barchetta Excelsior sits in the heart of the historic city, overlooking Lake Como. All of the 84 rooms and suites are air-conditioned and nonsmoking, and more than half offer views of the lake; some have balconies. All rooms include flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi, but the beige-and-green color scheme is dull and dated. The hotel has two restaurants, a bar, well-equipped meeting rooms, a computer and printer for guests' use, and offers discounts at nearby golf courses. Guests seeking a lakefront hotel with a more historic ambience, along with a gym and sauna, might want to consider the nearby Albergo Terminus.

Hotel Como
Via Mentana 28

The upper-middle-range Hotel Como might be a bit far from Lake Como, but a 2016 renovation has made this into a mostly modern hotel with a rooftop pool serviced by a garden bar, as well as a small gym, meeting room, lobby bar, and free bikes to borrow. There’s no full-service restaurant here and the gym equipment is a tad old. The 79 rooms are contemporary with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and air-conditioning. Some have balconies, and all feature dated bathrooms that weren’t included in the renovations. Take note that the hotel is seasonal and is closed November to February. Metropole Suisse Hotel doesn't have a pool, but it’s a good alternative with a restaurant and a location close to the lake.

Borgo Antico Hotel
Via Borgo Vico 47

This mid-range, boutique-style property is one of the most popular options in Como, thanks to its 27 charming rooms and convenient location on a historic cobblestone street, within walking distance of Lake Como, the Como San Giovanni train station, attractions such as the Como Cathedral, and several dining options. Breakfast and Wi-Fi are both free, but there's no full restaurant and some rooms get street noise. Rates are among the most reasonable in the area, though the nearby (and comparable) Borgovico Hotel is sometimes a little less.
