Scene
Elegant 17th-century colonial house that's now a hotel with charm and lots of romance
Alfiz Hotel is housed in a two-story 17th-century house that's packed with Spanish colonial charm. The building retains details from its origins -- like stone arches -- and the 2005 restoration turned up items like cannonballs and pottery that have been incorporated into the decor. Interiors are filled with period furnishings, antiques, and guests are greeted with a glass of sangria in the elegant lobby that's bright and outfitted with religious art. The atmosphere has lots of Old World charm and an undeniable dose of romance. Guests gather to read and relax in the library, or they retreat to the lush interior courtyard garden with trees and shrubbery. A splash pool sits in a secluded courtyard. The hotel draws mostly couples, and has an excellent location in the heart of historic Cartagena. Keep in mind that kids under 12 aren't allowed, which helps to keep the vibe quiet and refined.
