The
upper-middle-range InterContinental Suites Hotel Cleveland is located on the Cleveland
Clinic campus and includes wellness
touches such as allergy-free rooms with air purifiers. Its 162 rooms and suites are spacious and clean, and suites with small kitchenettes
are available. Public spaces are lovely
and include an outdoor courtyard. Given its location, it’s a smart choice for
Clinic visitors and patients. But, rates are in the luxury range, and it’s somewhat
isolated, with only a couple of fast food restaurants within walking distance. An
attractive alternative is the upper-middle-range DoubleTree by Hilton The Tudor
Arms Hotel. Housed in a historic building in nearby University Circle, it has
better rates and a free area shuttle that includes transportation to and from the Clinic.
Scene
Sophisticated and quiet hotel aimed at Cleveland Clinic patients and visitors
The InterContinental integrates natural wood and modern design touches into its interiors creating a sophisticated ambiance. The lobby showcases three large white,
orb-like chandeliers suspended together from the second floor, directly in
front of the rich wood and dark-granite front desk. Pearl-gray armchairs and sofas frame glass coffee tables in multiple spots in the quiet and elegant lobby. Square wood columns reach
up to the second floor of this eight-story building. Large banners stating “Be
Well” and “Stay Well” convey this hotel’s mission of serving as a place of rest
and comfort for patients at the adjacent Cleveland Clinic as well as their visitors. Wooden walls encase flat-screen TVs, and
there's a lovely landscaped courtyard with several tables and chairs for those
needing fresh air. The hotel's classy restaurant also has distinctive wood furniture
and floors that are illuminated by soft lighting to create a soothing
atmosphere.
Location
On the Cleveland Clinic campus, about 14 minutes from downtown Cleveland
The hotel is located in Cleveland’s East Side on the
Cleveland Clinic’s campus. There are a couple of fast food restaurants a three- to five-minute walk from the hotel, but no other restaurants are within reasonable walking distance. The Clinic campus is safe, with plenty of people walking about at all hours, but the surrounding area can be a bit sketchy. It's approximately five to seven minutes by car from
University Circle and its museums, including the Museum of Contemporary Art,
Cleveland Botanical Garden, and Cleveland Museum of Art. The Clinic operates a
free shuttle to and from the University Circle area, which stops at the hotel
every 10 to 15 minutes. Case Western Reserve University is about five minutes away
by car, and Cleveland State University’s campus is a 10-minute drive. Most
major downtown attractions can be reached in under 15 minutes by car,
including the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Museum, Quicken Loans Arena,
Progressive Field, and First Energy Stadium. The RTA Health Line that
runs to downtown stops a one-minute walk from the hotel entrance. Service to most
downtown attractions takes 25 to 35 minutes. The Cleveland Hopkins International
Airport is approximately a 25-minute drive or one hour by public transit.
Rooms
Rooms with polished decor, Keurig coffeemakers, mini-fridges, and microwaves
Room decor is modern and elegant but not overdone. Brownish-gray carpet accents cream, wallpapered walls, soft
gold drapes, and upholstered sofas and armchairs in soft gold and light gray tones.
The matching wood furniture is high quality and some pieces, such as the nightstands, have white ceramic tops. All rooms have electronic safes, dual-line phones with voice mail, free newspapers, and daily turndown service. Allergy-free Pure Rooms are available and come with air purifiers. Spacious one- and two-bedroom Suites earn high marks for being
clean and comfortable. They include separate living rooms with queen-size sleeper sofas, oversized armchairs, and second 37-inch flat-screen TVs. The living
room desks with two upholstered chairs can double as dining tables. Suites also have kitchenettes with sinks,
microwaves, mini-fridges, and Keurig coffeemakers. Bedrooms have one king or two double beds plus armchairs and iHome radios. Soft gold
throws and accent pillows add color and contrast the crisp white linens. Bathroom
areas are especially nice, with shower/tub combos and spacious, dark-granite vanities set outside the bathrooms with magnifying mirrors and individual toiletries. Rooms on the upper floors offer better views and receive less noise from the adjacent hospital.
Features
Valet parking, restaurant/lounge, guest laundry facilities, plus 24-hour business center and gym
As expected from the InterContinental chain, this hotel offers a range of upscale features, but some come with additional fees. The hotel’s full-service restaurant serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but breakfast is not included
in room rates. The restaurant also has a lounge, and there is a landscaped,
outdoor courtyard area where guests can dine in warm months. The hotel sells
snacks and beverages at its gift shop, and coffee/tea is offered in the lobby
for a fee. Other amenities include a spacious 24-hour fitness center with numerous
cardio and weight-training machines as well as free weights and a yoga station.
There's also plenty of meeting space and a 24-hour business center with a printer. Free Wi-Fi is accessible throughout the
property. On-site self-service laundry facilities are available, as are
same-day dry cleaning and laundry services that can be arranged through the front desk. The hotel offers valet parking only, and the service is expensive and gets backed up at times. Lower weekly rates are offered and unlimited in/out privileges are included. Guests wanting to save a little cash can look into the cheaper self-parking rates available in nearby Clinic garages. The hotel is completely nonsmoking, and pets are not allowed except for service animals.
