Situated a few blocks north of bustling Pier 60, Sandpearl Resort sits on the former site of the historic Clearwater Beach Hotel, which was built in 1917. In keeping with tradition, each night the Sandpearl chooses a guest to ring a historic bell to signal that dinner is served inside the hotel.The luxury resort sits on 700 feet of pristine beach and incorporates environmentally-efficient practices. The lobby is upscale-beachy, with beige furniture with lime and turquoise accents, seashells hanging from the chandeliers, and a giant coral reef-themed rug. Off to one side is a self-playing piano, which adds a classy and whimsical touch.Located in the foyer outside the highly acclaimed restaurant, Caretta on the Beach, there’s a wall displaying old photographs of the property’s history. The resort also hosts more than 50 gallery-quality works of art, including historic Clearwater Beach postcards, framed and on display. Rooms are chicly decorated and spacious.

The resort is located on Clearwater Beach, which is one of the busier beaches in the Tampa Bay area. The property is a half-mile from Pier 60, which is the beach’s main gathering place and site of the nightly Sunsets at Pier 60 Festival. It’s far enough down the road that the traffic tapers off a bit, and joggers can head toward the adjacent residential neighborhood to avoid dodging taxis. The property is also within walking distance of restaurants, souvenir shops, water sport rentals, and a pharmacy.

Rooms are decorated with upscale furnishings and have a beachy-chic, Old Florida decor. Not all rooms have balconies, but it's worth requesting one -- especially for views of the pool and Gulf of Mexico. Standard rooms include flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, Keurig coffeemakers, and alarm clocks with mp3 player docks. One- and two-bedroom suites have full kitchens, washer/dryers, tubs with separate showers, and separate living rooms with sleeper sofas. Housekeeping services get mixed reviews: some guests enjoy extra touches such as turndown service, but others have complained that rooms could use more attention.

The resort’s fitness center is small, but touches like wood floors and large windows make it a step up from the average hotel gym. Outdoor sunset yoga classes take place several times a week.
