The 19 guest rooms are bland, but some have gorgeous ocean views. The four-story pale yellow Hotel La Spiaggia with bold, yellow shutters is a bright fixture directly across the street from the beach. Guest rooms facing the ocean look out over sand crowded with orange-and-blue umbrellas and lounge chairs. The street is busy with people strolling to the beach or headed to the nearby outdoor cafe. White planters filled with purple flowers flank the entrance to the hotel. Inside, the lobby has black-and-white striped floors and red brush-stroked walls. Next to the front desk is a small bar with a few metal barstools. An outdoor patio area, with glass-topped wicker tables and matching chairs and lounge chairs, has plenty of space for guests to take in the ocean air.
A big part of the draw here is the intimate, family-run atmosphere -- most guests have wonderful things to say about the owner, Andrea, who is very knowledgeable about the area and happily provides local recommendations. All of the fresh fruit at the morning breakfast comes from Andrea's garden, and it's these sort of special extras, combined with the location, that make this property notable.

The Hotel La Spiaggia is located directly across from the beach in Monterosso al Mare, one of the five villages that make up Cinque Terre. There’s a cafe, a couple of restaurants, including a pizza spot and a beach shop steps from the hotel. It’s within a two-minute walk to the Monterosso train station, but a bit farther to the old town (about 10 minutes). It's less than an hour-and-a-half drive to the Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport.
