Bottom Line

The six-room Bed and Breakfast Il Vigneto is a budget-friendly property situated in the tiny hilltop village of Volastra in the heart of Cinque Terre National Park. The village is tiny -- there are just two restaurants -- but the view is striking and there are lots of hiking trails in the vicinity. Rooms and apartments (the later situated nearby) are spacious and clean but simple, with tiled floors, mini-fridges, TVs, and free Wi-Fi. However, there's no AC or extra amenities like electric kettles. The property has few common spaces, but guests love the tiny rooftop terrace that offers excellent views of the surrounding terraced hills of olive trees and the sea. A light breakfast is served here daily. Luna di Marzo offers a comparable alternative that offers a bigger breakfast and a little more lounge space, but it can be much pricier.

Scene

Budget bed-and-breakfast with basic country decor and astounding views

The Bed and Breakfast Il Vigneto is situated in a narrow, two-story building from 1889 with a bright salmon-pink facade, green shutters, and a terra-cotta roof. The property has few common spaces where guests can hang out, but stairways and the small dining area feature classic Tuscan country decor like tiled floors, sponge-painted yellow walls, and wrought-iron accents. The highlight of the property is the small rooftop terrace, a charming spot with cafe tables that overlooks the olive groves that cascade in terraces down the surrounding hills, with a view that extends to the coast. The simple rooms and apartments and competitive prices are a big draw for leisure travelers on a budget, especially the outdoorsy type who want to take advantage of the countryside location.

Location

Hilltop village in the heart of Cinque Terre National Park

This bed-and-breakfast is perched on a hill overlooking terraced olive groves stretching out to the sea. It's set in the tiny village of Volastra in the heart of Cinque Terre National Park. Most of the little town's narrow streets are pedestrian only, and the buildings here are packed side by side in a semi-circle along the hilltop. This little town has only two restaurants, both in walking distance from the property, and is near plenty of hiking trails. Many guests enjoy paths that lead to larger towns like Manarola (40-minute walk) and Corniglia (75-minute walk), which can also be reached by car in five minutes and 19 minutes, respectively. The Volastra bus station is a four-minute walk. Pisa International Airport is a 75-minute drive and Genoa Cristoforo Colombo Airport is about an hour and 45 minutes. Parking is available near the bus station.

Rooms

Clean, spacious rooms and apartments, but no AC and decor can feel dated

Individually decorated rooms and apartments are roomy and clean with white walls featuring a few framed pictures, tiled floors, and hardwood or wood laminate furniture. Classic Tuscan touches like wrought-iron headboards are common, but otherwise rooms are fairly basic with some outdated details. Bathrooms are simple with aqua and light gray tiling, bidets, toilets, and shower stalls, plus liquid soap dispensers. Guests should note that in some rooms, the private bathroom is situated outside of the room itself. Standard amenities include mini-fridges, televisions, and free Wi-Fi, but there's no AC. Sea-view rooms tend to cost more, but guests rave about the sweeping vistas they provide. In addition to the bed-and-breakfast's double, triple, and quadruple rooms, the property also has two apartments situated off-site but nearby, less than a minute's walk. Each of these contains a separate bedroom, living area with pull-out sofa, and a fully equipped kitchen. A small outdoor sitting area with patio furniture is also included in each, but guests can use the rooftop terrace at the main property, too.

Features

Rooftop terrace with sweeping views, but few extra property features

As expected for a bed-and-breakfast, Il Vigneto has limited extra property features. There's a small reception area, but no lobby. There's also a small dining table in the kitchen, but most guests will want to take breakfast outside on the rooftop terrace which has sweeping views of the countryside and coast. Breakfast is pretty basic -- coffee, fresh bread, jam and honey, and cornflakes are typical fare.
