B&B Il Parco is a lovely upper-middle-range bed-and-breakfast perched on a hill overlooking the village and sea of Monterosso al Mare in Cinque Terre. The out of the way location provides a respite from the crowds and extra space for unusual extras like a swimming pool and gardens, but it's a 15-minute trek downhill to the beach, restaurants, and trains. The hotel provides a free shuttle service to help alleviate the walk. The 12 rooms are contemporary and spacious, each has a private outdoor space and flat-screen TV. The hot buffet breakfast is included in room rates and the meal is served on a lovely terrace. For travelers who want to be in the heart of the village and near the hiking trail, check rates at the historic Hotel Stella della Marina.
Scene
Intimate bed-and-breakfast with garden grounds and sea views
B&B Il Parco is family-owned and operated by a local clan that takes obvious pride in the pleasant and romantic property. The hilltop location away from the village and beach means there's space for gardens and a swimming pool, two features that are hard to find in crowded Cinque Terre. Overall, the B&B is chic and well-maintained with wooden pathways and steps that meander through native plant beds and up to a sun deck and swimming pool. Views of the village and beach below are an added bonus, and benches and swings are scattered around the grounds so guests can soak in the sights. Most guests are international honeymooners (and the occasional family) who enjoy splitting their vacation time between relaxing at the hotel's pool and exploring the five villages.
Location
On a hilltop overlooking Monterosso al Mare
The tradeoff for the lovely views and quiet grounds is a 15-minute walk uphill from Monterosso al Mare. Part of the walk has a sidewalk and the streets are pretty quiet, so it's entirely safe, but there's little of interest in the immediate neighborhood other than villas and residences. Monterosso is home to the largest beach in Cinque Terre and the seafront and ancient village hold countless gelato shops, seafood restaurants, pizza joints, souvenir stores, and hotels. It's also where the train station and ferry docks are located. Travelers can ascend up to the path to Vernazza (about a two-hour hike) from the edge of the village. The hotel has a parking lot, but a car isn't recommended as parking is difficult to find and expensive. Most guests make use of the hotel's free shuttle or walk. Plan on about a 90-minute drive to Pisa International Airport or two and a half hours to Florence.
Rooms
Contemporary rooms with bold beds and private outdoor spaces
There are 12 rooms at B&B Il Parco which are mostly the same, and differ only in terms of size, layout, and location on the grounds. Each has a bold, contemporary decor scheme that includes orange accent walls, oversize leather padded headboards, and velvet armchairs or sofas. Vintage photos of the village hang on the walls for a dose of local color. Private outdoor spaces are furnished with chairs or sun loungers and tables. All rooms come with free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, flat-screen TV, and a safe. Bathrooms look modern and feature glass walk-in showers and bowl sinks. Wall-mounted hairdryers and toiletries are provided. Some rooms have enormous windows and lovely views of the sea in the distance, while others in the back of the property overlook the grounds and then the sea.
Features
Delicious free breakfast, swimming pool, and sun terrace with views
Almost all of the features are al fresco, allowing guests to soak up the sun. The free hot breakfast is included in room rates. The meal is served on a covered terrace with lovely views, and is a combination of ordered items like omelets and buffet options such as pastries and fruit. Unfortunately, there isn't a bar, which would be appealing for guests who otherwise love the secluded swimming pool and sun terrace. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. There's a small lot for parking cars, and a free shuttle service that runs to and from the village.
