Bottom Line

This midrange hotel, which shares a building with the members-only Club Quarters Central Loop Hotel, is a solid value in the center of The Loop, within walking distance of many tourist attractions. Rooms are small and a little generic, but modern, with flat-screen TVs and comfy beds (some come with kitchenettes). Nice freebies (coffee, newspapers, Wi-Fi) and the lively on-site gastropub are highlights, but don't expect too much in the way of service; with an electronic check-in and concierge services shared by both hotels, the hotel can give off a "do-it-yourself" attitude.

Scene

A mostly generic mid-range hotel with some nice touches that add value

The Central Loop Hotel is a no-frills property located on the corner of West Adams and Clark Street, in the heart of Chicago’s business district and blocks from famous Grant Park. It has a generic lobby with leather ottomans and a fireplace, but only the members-only Club Quarters hotel in the same building has a front desk staff -- Central Loop Hotel guests have to check in electronically. This hotel itself doesn’t stand out, but its affordable rates make it a rarity in this tourist-centric location.

Location

Located in the heart of the Loop, four blocks from Grant Park

The Central Loop Hotel is set in the heart of the Loop, with an unbeatable location close to hundreds of dining and shopping options, and blocks from the Theater District. Most of the popular tourist attractions, like Millennium Park and the world-class Art Institute of Chicago, are within easy walking distance. For longer distances, five subway lines and the Metra run within four blocks of the hotel.- 7-minute walk to the City Hall

  • 7-minute walk t to the Willis Tower (formerly Sears Tower)
  • 8-minute walk to the Theatre District
  • 8-minute walk to the Symphony Center
  • 9-minute walk to the Art Institute of Chicago
  • 12-minute walk to the Millennium Park
  • 16-minute walk to the Buckingham Fountain
  • 25-minute walk or 13-minute subway ride to the Magnificent Mile
  • 15-minute subway ride to the John Hancock Observatory
  • 15-minute subway ride to the Old Town
  • 26-minute subway ride to the Wrigley Field
  • 12-minute drive or 28-minute bus ride to the Museum of Science and Industry
  • 20-minute drive to Midway International Airport
  • 35-minute drive to O’Hare International Airport

Rooms

Generic, but modern, rooms

The decor -- checked bedspreads and chain-like wooden furniture -- feels somewhat generic and the Single Rooms are quite small. But all rooms come with some amenities even more expensive hotels lack, like free Internet access (both wired and wireless) and iPod docks. Some have kitchenettes and pull-out sofas, which are great for families and groups. The hotel completed soft renovations in 2012, painting and replacing carpeting in more neutral shades of tan and cream instead of the original dark navy blue.- Flat-screen TV with some cable channels

  • Free wired and wireless Internet access
  • Cordless phone with private dial number
  • Coffeemaker with free coffee and tea
  • iPod dock
  • The basic room types are pretty small, starting at 210 square feet. Upgrading you to a Superior room gets you a kitchenette and a bit more space (285 square feet).

Features

Solid freebies (Internet access, bottled water, printing) and a fitness room, but little more

  • Free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel
  • Free business center with a computer and a printer
  • Discounted tickets for Windella River Cruises and Willis Skydeck Tower
  • Free newspapers, magazines, coffee and tea in the lobby, and stations with free coffee, tea, and water bottles on every floor
  • Shopping services and refrigerator stocking upon request
  • 24-hour conciergeView full list of amenities

All-Inclusive / Food

A lively gastropub

The hotel’s restaurant, Elephant and Castle -- part of a chain with 20 outposts in the U.S. and Canada -- is a popular spot serving British and American classics like Shepherd’s Pie and Fish and Chips. The place is also known for its excellent selection of beers, and it’s a favorite amongst businessmen from the corporate offices around for after work drinks. It has the spirit of a British pub, but you won’t find any drunken soccer fans here -- the ambience is casual, though it gets packed for lunch and dinner.- 24-hour room service available from local restaurants
