Apartment-style property lacks some of the services of a hotel
The Kantary Hills is a member of the boutique Kantary Collection of Hotels and Residences, and this branch delivers on brand expectations as well as the others. It's located in the uber-trendy and happening Nimmanheiminda Road area of Chiang Mai, and the streets here are lined with fashionable cafes and popular dining and drinking spots. The kitchenette-equipped rooms here are extremely large, more suitable to apartment living, as the hotel is also a long-term residence resort. They are contemporary and far bigger than anything found downtown for this price. While the facilities are excellent, you do sacrifice tourist location by staying here. The old city is not within walking distance and the traffic in this part of town is the worst in Chiang Mai.
Scene
More of a glitzy residence feel than a hotel
With several industrial estates and factories nearby, the Kantary Hills is popular with long-term residents here on business, and the rooms and amenities are in sync with this. The hotel has a rather somber yet stylish feel to it, with plenty of designer chairs and divans in the lobby, where guests can be found working on their laptops. Large families with kids wanting to hoot and holler will be out of place here. Those who want to explore old Chiang Mai also won't be calling this spot home, due to the neighborhood and distance from the old city. The quiet and elegant demeanor here is more suited to the young at heart who want to experience the neighborhood's trendy dining and bars. This resort feels like a "work by day, play by night" kind of spot.
Location
Just off of the most trendy and happening dining, drinking, and shopping strip in town
Nimmanheiminda Road has become Chiang Mai's trendiest district, and it is full of cafes, bars, restaurants, and clubs. Kantary Hills sits just off the main drag, so is close to all the action. On the downside, this area is far from central Chiang Mai. Neither the old city nor the downtown area by the river are within walking distance, and the traffic in this area is really horrible, especially around rush hour. Finding a parking space on Nimmanheiminda is impossible.
Rooms
Large rooms with all the features of a serviced apartment
The rooms at Kantary Hills are some of the largest in Chiang Mai and are a good value compared to the competition. Contemporary, streamlined decor is in a neutral color palette of browns and creams. As the hotel also serves as a long-term residence, the Studios, One-, and Two-Bedroom Suites all have kitchenettes and washing machines. The Studio Rooms run from 46 square meters (495 square feet) on up, more akin to the size of a luxury suite at places downtown. Rooms also feature dining room areas and balconies.
Features
Swimming pool, whirpools, a well-equipped fitness center, business center, and more
The Kantary Hills is well set up for a traveller's every need. The swimming pool is spacious and is set on a lovely outdoor terrace, with several heated whirlpools surrounding it. The nearby fitness center has lots of reasonably modern equipment (though cardio machines lack individual TVs), along with a steam room and sauna. The hotel has a full business center to take care of any work needs, and there is free Wi-Fi in all public areas. The Nimman Bar & Grill is a stylish steakhouse that also serves inclusive buffet breakfasts, and the Cafe Kantary nearby is the perfect spot for people-watching, relaxing, and enjoying homemade pastries, cakes, and stylish coffee drinks.
