Bottom Line

Set along a quaint, cobblestone backstreet in the heart of Chiang Mai’s old walled city, the Chankam Boutique Hotel is a tiny, three-and-a-half-pearl hotel that's close to the city’s main attractions. The 12 rooms are decorated in a traditional Thai style, and are kitted out with king-size beds, Nespresso coffee machines, modern bathrooms, and free soft drinks from the minibar. Guests enjoy the free Western-style breakfast, served in the hotel’s plush lounge area, although the selection is a bit basic and some guests aren’t too keen on having to order it the night beforehand. The hotel has free Wi-Fi and offers free bikes to borrow, but there's no pool. Those dead-set on staying in a hotel with a pool might want to check out the BED Phrassingh -- but it's adult-only.

Chankam Boutique Hotel

Scene

A tiny but charming, Lanna-style hotel with an inviting lounge

It might be tiny, but the Chankam Boutique Hotel has more than its fair share of charm. It's set down a quiet cobbled alley in the old walled city. The entire ground floor of the hotel is taken up by a large, open-plan lounge and dining room, centered around a little pond with a fountain and a smattering of greenery. The lounge is decorated in traditional Lanna-style, with traditional carved-wood armchairs and couches upholstered in richly-patterned fabrics. Shelves hold collections of local knick-knacks, and the hallways are papered with prints of historic Thai paintings, blown-up to enormous proportions. The hotel attracts guests looking for a quiet but tasteful retreat from Chiang Mai’s sights and sounds.

Location

Located along a quiet and central cobbled backstreet in the heart of the walled city

The Chankam Boutique Hotel’s quiet backstreet location gives it the best of both worlds: It's set in the heart of Chiang Mai’s picturesque walled city, and the hotel is no more than a 10-minute walk from many of the ancient temples that draw visitors from across the world. Further afield, the bustling, artsy Nimmanhaemin Road is a 10-minute drive away by taxi or tuk-tuk. The Night Bazaar, home to a dizzying range of bars, street-food stalls, and sit down restaurants, is 15 minutes away by car in the other direction. Transfers to Chiang Mai Airport take around 15 to 20 minutes depending on traffic, while Chiang Mai’s station is a 20-minute drive.

Features

Free Western breakfast, an all-day cafe and bar, and free bikes to borrow

The Chankam Boutique Hotel is light on amenities, and guests looking for a pool, spa, or gym should look elsewhere. That said, guests tend to appreciate the free Western-style breakfast on offer, even if some find the selection a bit basic, and others are not keen on having to order it the night before. The hotel’s large, open lounge area doubles as the Chankam Kitchen cafe, which serves both Western- and Thai-style meals, coffees, and cocktails throughout the day and into the evening. The hotel has a few bikes with baskets that it lends out to guests for free, and there is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel.
