Bottom Line

The Awanahouse is a small guesthouse in a quiet alley just inside the walls of the Old City. Its 16 air-conditioned rooms are tiny and basic, but all come with flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, and tiny balconies. Although the guesthouse is small, it manages to fit in a little covered swimming pool, a restaurant, a massage room, and a rooftop terrace hangout area. The plain rooms aren't going to win any fashion awards, but this the guesthouse offers good value in a quiet and convenient location.

Scene

Budget traveler guesthouse with rooftop common area

The Awanahouse doesn't have many public spaces. The top hangout spot is the rooftop terrace, with lounge chairs and beanbag cushions to chill on. Hand painted murals add an authentic, arty element and there are matching leather couches in the lobby. Guests here are mostly young budget travelers, most of whom go out for the day and use the Awanahouse as a quiet spot to retire in the evenings. The guesthouse also caters to families with its larger rooms with bunk beds, which are harder to come by in Chiang Mai.

Location

On a quiet lane in the historic Old City, walking distance to restaurants and attractions

The Awanahouse is located on a quiet, peaceful lane, just inside Thapae Gate, the eastern entrance into Chiang Mai's historical Old City. The guesthouse is close to all of Chiang Mai's most famous temples, and is in a great location for exploring the small alleyways and side streets of the Old City. There are plenty of restaurants and bars within a few minutes' walk from the hotel, and the airport is a 20-minute drive away.

Rooms

Tiny, simple rooms with artsy murals, small balconies, and flat-screen TVs with cable channels

The Awanahouse is a small guesthouse with 16 basic rooms, ranging from small Singles to more spacious Family Rooms. Single Rooms are closet-like, with phones mounted on the wall to save space. At the other end of the spectrum, Family Rooms have more space and come with bunk beds for kids. All rooms come with flat-screen TVs with cable, mini-fridges, fans, and air-conditioning, and the walls feature colorful murals, such as painted-on window scenes. There are even tiny balconies, but they lack views.

Features

Tiny swimming pool, small cafe, rooftop terrace, massage room, laptop rental, and free Wi-Fi

As the Awanahouse is a tiny guesthouse, it doesn't have many facilities. There is a small covered swimming pool downstairs, good for cooling off, but it doesn't get sunlight. There is also a small restaurant that serves Thai and international items at breakfast (not included) and Thai food at lunch and dinner. The rooftop terrace has beanbag cushions and a few lounge chairs for tanning. Thai massages are offered in the on-site massage room and laptops can be rented from the front desk. Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
