Bottom Line

The two-pearl Hotel Le Chamonix’s simple hostel-style setup and central location against the gorgeous backdrop of Mont Blanc attracts mostly backpackers and skiers looking for a convenient and affordable option in the resort village. The 31 rustic rooms are small and simple, but they offer comfortable beds, free Wi-Fi, and beautiful mountain views -- some have balconies. Aside from a buffet breakfast and ski equipment storage, there aren’t many amenities here. The property’s appeal lies more in its proximity to the ski lifts, train station, and village restaurants, all of which are under 10 minutes away on foot. The Mercure Chamonix Les Bossons is further from the village center, but has a full restaurant, a stylish lounge, and an indoor pool.

Scene

Simple and rustic, suited to backpackers and skiers

This small hotel is clearly designed to function as a hostel-style option for backpackers and skiers. Despite having few frills, it manages to exude rustic charm in its simplicity. The stone building has exterior window shutters, Juliet balconies dotted with geraniums, and roof dormers. Inside, the tiny lobby (which doubles as a breakfast room) is outfitted almost entirely in wood, from the reception desk to the wall panels. There’s little else on the property aside from the lobby and rooms, so mingling is mostly done elsewhere or in the basement bar, keeping the atmosphere on-site relatively quiet. Narrow halls and stairwells aren’t the most practical and, along with the lack of elevators, wouldn’t suit older travelers, little kids, or guests with mobility issues.

Location

In the heart of Chamonix village, within 10-minute walk to ski lifts and train station

Set in the picturesque heart of Chamonix, but just off the noisier streets, the hotel’s location is ideal for the fantastic view of Mont Blanc from its front door. Bars, restaurants, shops, and the tourism office are around the corner, and the Alpine Museum is two minutes away on foot. The ski lifts and Aiguille du Midi cable cars are a 10-minute walk away. The Train du Montenvers-Mer de Glace is a seven-minute walk away. The Mer de Glace valley glacier is a 45-minute drive away.  Geneva International Airport is about 70 minutes away by car. The hotel can arrange an airport shuttle for fees.

Rooms

Small and simple, with Alpine-inspired wood furnishings and some balconies

Available in Twin, Double, Triple, Family (with bunk beds), or Comfort varieties, room types suit a large range of guests. Wood paneling, candlelight-shaped sconces, and red wall-to-wall carpeting give the small (but clean) rooms a warm and traditional Alpine look that might come across as tired to some. Several rooms have balconies with seating, but even those that don’t still have beautiful views of Mont Blanc. Rooms are minimally appointed, with heaters, small desks, small flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and small desks, but no safes. Tea-and coffee-making facilities aren’t provided, but can be requested. Closets are spacious, and beds are comfortable.Bathrooms have basic tiling and are slightly small, with tiny sinks. Most bathrooms feature walk-in showers with sliding doors and handheld showerheads, and some have full bathtubs. Minimal toiletries and hairdryers are provided.

Features

Breakfast buffet, ski equipment storage, and free Wi-Fi throughout

Features here are minimal. There isn't a full restaurant on-site, but a bar beneath the hotel is a popular mingling area. Breakfast can be booked with rates, and is provided on wooden tables and chairs in a compact room in the lobby. The simple continental buffet includes yogurts, cereals, fruit, hard-boiled eggs, and cold cuts. The room also features a small bookshelf with a book exchange and board games. A basement offers storage for ski boots and equipment. Wi-Fi throughout is free. There is no parking available on-site.
