Open seasonally (April to September)
From bottle warmers and changing tables to kid-friendly menus and crayons in the dining room, this all-inclusive resort is geared towards families with young children. The yellow Swiss-chalet exterior is a bit dated, but kids won't notice. Instead, they will focus on the cheerful aquatic-themed walls sculpted with coral, tropical fish, dolphins, and a giant friendly octopus. Hotel amenities include lots of activities for the little ones and, for adults, a spa offering a Turkish bath, sauna, and variety of beauty and massage treatments. Room decor is extremely drab, however, and showers are tiny.
Scene
Family-friendly with organized activities and facilities specifically for small children
Lots of thought has gone into meeting the needs of young families; there's a fleet of strollers to borrow, beach toys at the ocean, and a staff dedicated to entertaining the little ones. The lobby is spacious and welcoming with plenty of seating, games laid out on the coffee tables, and a large curved blonde wood bar. Behind the hotel is a grove of pine trees with trails, and beyond that, the Adriatic Sea. An attractive wellness center with glass mosaic tile accents provides an area for adult relaxation and massages.
Location
On the coast of the Adriatic Sea, near the center of Pinarella
Located in Pinarella, the Pinetina Mare is 70 minutes southeast of Bologna’s airport and an hour north of the tiny hilltop country of San Marino. The hotel sits directly on a narrow street with a pine forest and beach behind it. The commercial center of Pinarella -- with shopping, flea markets, shows, a bus stop, banks, and a post office -- is a five-minute walk away, while the harbor is under two miles away. Ravenna, a town known for its beautiful ancient mosaics and eight UNESCO World Heritage sites, is about a 30-minute drive north.
Rooms
Basic, modest units with flexible floorplans
Rooms are modest with old-school bedspreads, ceramic tile floors, and little artwork. Unit configurations include doubles, triples, and quadruples. Some have bunk beds (guard rails available) and a crib can be furnished on request. Bathrooms are small and do not have tubs, although they do have bidets. All are equipped with independent air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi.
Features
All-inclusive with kids' activities and a well-equipped spa
Prices include three meals a day, beach umbrellas and chairs, drinks with meals (water, wine, soda, and afternoon tea in the garden), lots of entertainment for the kids, and free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel. At the beach, the staff organizes activities, games, workshops, and sports tournaments. (Children ages one month to two years old have their own mini-club.) Kids can eat earlier than their parents and then join an activity, leaving adults free to dine together. There are also dozens of bikes in many sizes to borrow. The wellness center offers treatments and a Turkish bath, whirlpool, sauna, and relaxation area with tea. There's no pool, however, or gym.
