The Jung Hotel & Residences

The Jung Hotel first opened in 1907, where it prospered until the 1960s when it shut down until it was purchased in 2012. It finally reopened in January 2018 after an extensive 140-million-dollar renovation, giving the hotel a sleek look from top to bottom. A stone facade with carved signage and plaque showcasing its placement on the National Register of Historic Places hints at its past, but interiors are swish and modern, though with hints of 1920s style. A large marbled lobby is filled with partitioned seating areas with marble-patterned couches, silver flower-like light fixtures, and colorful artwork, and an open-plan bar sits at its center. Rooms and features are spacious and spread out here, and everything still looks fresh. Some kinks are still being worked out, as guests have complained of check-in issues, confusion around breakfast offerings, and complicated access to reach the pool. We visited the property soon after the hotel opened and the vibe was quiet and laid-back, attracting mostly couples who want to be walking distance from attractions but away from the accompanying noise. Note that some of the hotel's units are residential.
There's little in the immediate area, so travelers still wanting to be in the Central Business District but with a more central setting may prefer the business-friendly Intercontinental New Orleans or trendy Ace Hotel.

The Jung Hotel sits along Canal Street in the Central Business District of New Orleans, close to its northeastern edge. This means that it's a bit removed from most attractions, and the immediate surrounds can feel a bit gritty. Bourbon Street and all other sights within the French Quarter, including Jackson Square, Cafe Du Monde, and Preservation Hall, are between a 15- and 25-minute walk away. Harrah's Casino and renowned dining such as Peche are around the same distance. The Mercedes-Benz Superdome is a 13-minute away, while Tulane Medical Center is about a five-minute stroll. Travelers looking to take a streetcar can pick up multiple lines just across Canal Street. Louis Armstrong New Orleans International Airport is around a 25-minute drive from the hotel, without traffic.
Note that the hotel's main entrance and valet parking is on Lasalle Street.

Ranging from lower-category Deluxe Rooms to Suites, the 207 units are all decorated in a gorgeous, contemporary style. Expect serene shades of sky blue and gold on the beds, black furniture with sparkling silver-granite tops, marble floors with small patterned rugs by the beds, and beige walls with modern artwork. Multiple lamps and windows keep rooms bright, and reclining armchairs offer seating. While some rooms have city views, others have poor building vistas. Unfortunately, some guests have complained of internal noise issues due to wood-floored hallways. All units have work desks and units housing coffeemakers and mini-fridges with free bottled water, while Executive Rooms add kitchenettes and washer/dryers. Some suites have separate living spaces.
Standard amenities consist of big flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, Bluetooth alarm clocks, and either queen- or king-size beds. Good-sized bathrooms are lovely, with brown-papered walls, shiny brown-tiled walk-in showers, and marble vanities with two sinks. Free toiletries, hairdryers, and bathrobes are provided.

The standout feature here is the rooftop pool, set in a huge terrace with tons of cushioned chairs, loungers, and dining tables. At one end is a seasonal pool bar with shaded seating. City views here include unattractive construction. Another bar is found in the lobby, serving a variety of cocktails, draft beer, and wine. Down the hall from the bar is the attractive restaurant, featuring the same color blue on the walls, ceiling, and banquette seating. Chairs and booths are upholstered in Art Deco-like orange and blue-floral patterned fabrics, while star light fixtures hang from the ceiling and gold wall hanging are attached to marble columns. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch, and room service is available.
A fitness center has modern cardio and strength-training equipment, and a laundry room with washers and dryers is available for all guests. A business center is in the lobby, and extensive meeting and event spaces can be booked. The Jung Hotel Grand Hall has chandeliers from the original hotel, and it sits next to the property's historic (non-functioning) bar. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, and valet parking is available for a fee.
