Comfort Suites is arguably the best affordable option in the expensive Seven Mile Beach area of Grand Cayman. A mid-level chain, it has all the expected basic amenities –- clean and modern rooms, business and fitness centers, free hot breakfast, and free Wi-Fi. Other draws include an attractive pool area, a small but beautiful beachfront, an on-site restaurant and bar with surprisingly good food, and a dive shop. It's hard to do better for your money in this area -- just be aware Comfort Suites isn't directly on the sand (it's about a minute's walk down a private path) and its section of beach is a bit small.
Scene
A well-priced mid-range chain drawing families, couples, and business travelers
Comfort Suites Seven Mile Beach holds appeal for both business travelers as well as tourists looking for a lower-priced option on Seven Mile Beach.
Business travelers are a significant part of the hotel's customer base, and it's not unusual to see just as many people in suits as in beach gear at breakfast in the morning. The hotel’s proximity to Georgetown and the airport as well as free Wi-Fi access makes it an appealing option for those traveling for work. The hotel also offers meeting rooms for small groups.
Families, couples, and groups of friends looking for a bargain along Seven Mile Beach make up the rest of the hotel’s guests. The relaxing pool and beach areas, along with better-than-expected amenities, make it an attractive choice for tourists. The landscaped pool area has plenty of shade, lounge chairs, and palm trees, along with a few hammocks. The small beachfront (located 50 yards from the hotel) can get crowded in peak season, but the coast in this area is stunning. Stingers Restaurant & Pool Bar, the hotel’s on-site eatery, is casual, festive, and popular, with many of the hotel's guests congregating here for a bite to eat or a happy hour drink.
The lobby is adequate and unremarkable with a small seating area near the door. The front desk is well-staffed and helpful with guest requests.
Location
In the Seven Mile Beach area, close to Georgetown
Comfort Suites is located on West Bay Road, the busy, main road of the Seven Mile Beach area. The hotel is across the street from Coconut Joe’s, a popular bar and grill, and walking distance or a short cab ride to other local eateries. It's also just a one- or two-minute walk to the sand along a private path. It is a five-minute drive to Camana Bay, a huge shopping district with restaurants, cafes, and a cinema. The hotel is a 10-minute drive from the airport.
Comfort Suite’s location to Georgetown (10-minute drive), makes it an appealing option for business travelers.
Rooms
No-frills, modern, and clean
The modern rooms have comfortable, modern white bedding, blue drapes, and a clean carpet. Artwork is minimal and there are no snazzy furnishings or decorations, which is to be expected from a mid-range chain. Each room has basic wood furnishings with a dresser, desk, end tables, and a flat-screen TV. The lamps have multiple electric outlets for charging electronics. The bathrooms are unremarkable, with basic toiletries and a hairdryer. Most bathrooms only have a stand-up shower, not a tub.
The rooms are spacious and come with kitchenettes that include a mini-fridge, microwave, and sink. Each room has an iron and ironing board. The hotel is in the process of replacing its safes (as of fall 2014). The newer safes are digital, easy to use, and have enough room for a small laptop. The older safes are smaller (can't fit a laptop), have a fee for use, and require a deposit.
The hotel offers studios as well as one- and two-bedroom suites. The rooms are spotless, although there can be some small maintenance issues –- the hot and cold water were reversed in my room, for example, and there are some guest complaints about the shower curtains being too short.
The rooms at the Comfort Suites are the best value in the Seven Mile Beach area.
Features
A great poolside restaurant, a dive shop, and free lounge chairs at the beach
The hotel is located 50 yards from the beach –- a minute-and-a-half walk down a private, well-marked sandy path. The beach area is very small and located next to the Marriott hotel, whose beach gets considerably crowded with lounge chairs and umbrellas. Comfort Suites supplies lounge chairs (plastic rather than cushioned) and umbrellas to its guests for free and there is also a beach attendant. The lounge chairs can run out during peak times; the hotel suggests renting a lounge chair for a fee at a nearby hotel. Seven Mile Beach is a public beach, and while the use of other hotels’ facilities (chairs, umbrellas, etc.) is prohibited, all areas of the beach are open to the public. This stretch of coast is stunning, with clean white sand, clear turquoise water, and spectacular sunsets. Holiday Inn Resort Grand Cayman offers rooms and amenities at a similar price but Comfort Suites has a much nicer beachfront.
Comfort Suites has an attractive pool area with plenty of shade from palm trees, hammocks, and an ample amount of lounge chairs. The pool is clean and inviting. There is also a hot tub off to the side.
Stingers Restaurant & Pool Bar, the hotel’s on-site eatery, is located in the pool area, with outdoor seating facing the pool. Bright and colorful, the restaurant serves lunch and dinner and has happy hour specials. The food is casual, decently priced, and very good.
Comfort Suites has an on-site dive shop, Ambassador Divers, that offers dive trips and packages for beginner and experienced divers. Excursions include two-tank boat dives, Stingray City snorkeling, and night dives. The shop offers a free introductory scuba pool session.
The hotel has free Wi-Fi and a free hot breakfast. The breakfast includes eggs, sausage or bacon, waffles, cereal, pastries, fruit, coffee, juice, and yogurt. The breakfast area is popular in the morning and can get crowded during peak hours, although there is an outdoor section with additional tables.
