Varying reports on food and entertainment quality
With only light entertainment and an adult-only policy, the three-pearl Sumus Hotel Monteplaya has a super laid-back vibe. The relaxed atmosphere and location across from the beach in Malgrat de Mar draws most travelers, as do the updated rooms that feature modern comforts like air-conditioning and mini-fridges. All-inclusive rates are available at the hotel’s buffet restaurant, but like the entertainment, the food gets varying reports concerning quality. The most beloved feature is the two-level outdoor pool. Note that lounger fortune only comes to those who wake up early. Families might want to consider the nearby Tropic Park for its kids’ club and rooftop swimming pool.
Scene
Contemporary hotel with a floral theme and an adult-only policy
Sumus Hotel Monteplaya makes a lovely impression in the lobby. It’s a bright area with wood floors that contrast with the white walls and floral photographic prints throughout the property. A white globe-like woven pod in the center of the lobby speaks to the stylish nature of most of the spaces and rooms. Guests primarily spend their time outdoors around the pool, which is why loungers can be hard to come by. With only light entertainment and an adult-only policy (minimum 16 years of age), the atmosphere here is peaceful and relaxed. While the hotel isn’t romantic in terms of decor, couples are drawn to the hotel's proximity to the beach and the adult-only policy.
Location
Across the street from the beach and surrounded by dining options and bars
Sumus Hotel Monteplaya is a few minutes’ walk to the sandy shores of Malgrat de Mar’s beach. Malgrat de Mar isn’t particularly large so it's easy to walk to plenty of dining options, coffee shops, and bars on surrounding streets. For those with a car, Marineland Catalunya, a water park, is a seven-minute drive away. Parc del Castell takes five minutes by car. There’s a bus stop outside the hotel -- convenient for travelers without cars. The train stop takes 16 minutes to reach on foot. It’s an hour’s drive to Barcelona-El Prat Airport.
Rooms
Modern rooms with balconies, mini-fridges, and kettles
Sumus Hotel Monteplaya has 168 renovated rooms (completed in 2017). There are some simple elements like laminate wood or glossy white floors and white IKEA-esque furniture. However, the floral theme in wall art and colorful bed runners add some character to the spaces. Flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, kettles, and air-conditioning are provided in all rooms. There is a fee for the use of the safes and Wi-Fi is only free if you book directly with the hotel. The bathrooms are especially modern with glass showers and circular vessel sinks. Hairdryers and toiletries in wall dispensers are provided. Furnished balconies provide sea, mountains and gardens, or swimming pool views.
Features
Two-level outdoor pool is the most attractive feature, followed by a buffet restaurant with all-inclusive options
The hotel's two-level outdoor pool is the highlight. The upper level pool has high water pressure streams and a waterfall. There are sun loungers, though they fill up pretty quickly. Beyond the pool, guests will find that the hotel is lacking in a gym or spa, but focuses on amenities like day and night entertainment that includes dance classes, yoga, or shows. Past guests have complained about the quality of the entertainment. The restaurant has a buffet of Mediterranean and international selections for all three meals, and the lounge bar offers drinks and snacks throughout the day. Bed-and-breakfast, half-board, and full-board options are available, but they come with limits on drinks. Wi-Fi is free, and the public computers cost a fee to use. Parking in the on-site garage incurs a charge.
