Bottom Line

A value hotel in Santa Susanna within a short walk of the beach, Riviera Hotel offers an outdoor pool, a small children’s pool, and a bar with terrace seating. Common spaces, as well as rooms, are dated, with faded fabrics and furnishings showing wear and tear, and the food at the buffet restaurant receives mixed reviews. The fitness center and spa area are a highlight, and appear more modern and up-to-date than the rest of the hotel. Guests may also want to look into the Aqua Hotel Aquamarina, a modern hotel with posh dining areas and a big spa.

Scene

Enjoyable outdoor areas, dated children’s areas, and modern spa

The Riviera Hotel has a few outdoor areas where guests can relax with a drink, including a bar with wicker chairs on a terrace overlooking the pool area. There’s also a snack bar with white bar stools and covered seating on the sidewalk, where guests can enjoy a burger and fries, or a pizza. The pool area is surrounded by a tile deck, and there are outdoor showers for rinsing off. The sauna and whirlpool are in a small, modern spa with dark, sleek walls and a rain shower. Unfortunately, the children’s play areas don't impress -- they consist of a small playground in a patchy yard with a swing set and faded wooden bouncy animals, and a kids’ club room with little in the way of playful decor.

Location

Area full of hotels and short walk to beach

The hotel is located within a five-minute walk of the long, sandy beach in Santa Susanna, a coastal resort town between Malgrat de Mar and Pineda de Mar,  near Montenegre-Corredor National Park. It's in an area with several hotels, and there are plenty of restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance. There is also a weekly market in the area. The airport in Girona is  about a 30-minute drive away, and Barcelona’s airport is about an hour's drive. There's also a train directly connecting Santa Susanna and Barcelona.

Rooms

Clean, basic rooms with dated furnishings and small balconies

Rooms are clean and basic, with wooden parquet floors and cream walls. Furnishings, which include faded patterned chairs and brass-framed pictures, are dated, though. Rooms have wall-mounted tube-style TVs (no flat-screens here), and tile balconies are furnished with plastic chairs. Bathrooms are small with tiny glass shower stalls with hand showers. Fees are imposed for safety deposit boxes and Wi-Fi, and guests report that rooms can be noisy.

Features

Outdoor pool, snack bar, fitness center, and spa

The hotel has an outdoor pool with a separate children’s pool and lounge chairs. A bar with terrace seating overlooks the pool area, and a snack bar on the sidewalk serves food and drinks. The buffet restaurant serves three meals a day, but the food receives mixed reviews. The hotel has a small, bright fitness center with a handful of machines, and a modern spa with a whirlpool and a sauna. There’s a kids’ club and a small outdoor playground. The lobby area has a billiards table, and there is an Internet corner available with three pay-per-use computers. Parking is available for a fee.
