Located on the seafront near Roses, this three-pearl property is a solid choice for Costa Brava-bound vacationers looking to be close to the beach. Its 167 guest rooms -- the best which have water-view balconies -- all come with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges and a rustic-refined decor that extends into the common areas. For many guests, though, the real draws are the sandy strand below plus the property’s own fun-in-the-sun features: most notably a four-season outdoor pool and a lawn for sunbathing. There's also a buffet-style restaurant that offers add-on meal plans, as well as a bar and lounge area with seating indoors and out. Guests wanting more in the way of fitness facilities should consider the nearby Prestige Victoria instead -- it’s a mid-range sister hotel where the features include a pair of pools, a spa and a gym.
Scene
Relaxed mid-range property with a rustic-refined Mediterranean look
The Prestige Coral Platja occupies a boxy five-story building overlooking Santa Margarida Beach, and, although the actual structure is only about 50-years old, traditional design elements lend it the charm of a bygone era. The facade, for instance, features balconies trimmed with iron rails plus floor-to-ceiling windows with full-length shutters. Inside, the common areas -- complete with terra-cotta-tiled floors, vibrant ocher walls and a stand-out ceiling that’s coffered in some places and graciously arched in others -- further enhance the vintage Spanish vibe. The hotel’s countrified Mediterranean look (coupled, of course, with its beachfront position) helps create a relaxed atmosphere that appeals to vacationing couples and families in summer. In shoulder seasons, it’s also popular with European tour groups… perhaps _too _popular given that their presence can create overcrowding in the restaurant, pool, and lawn area.
Location
An enviable seafront setting on the outskirts of Roses
Located just outside Roses, a coastal town about 98 miles northeast of Catalonia's capital, this hotel sits less than 50 feet from sandy Santa Margarida Beach. Roses itself -- which is a mere five-minute drive away (or a 13-minute stroll along the seaside promenade) -- is a popular tourist destination with all the expected services, including restaurants, bars, tour operators, and sports outfitters. If you’re in the mood for a daytrip, top-rated Costa Bravan communities like Figueres, Cadaques, and Girona can be reached in under an hour; those needing a big city buzz can hit central Barcelona in slightly under two. Note that there is free but limited on-site parking for guests with cars; rental bikes are also available in case you'd prefer to pedal.- Seven-minute walk to Ciutadella de Roses
Rooms
Clean, comfortable rooms with a countrified Mediterranean design
Flooded with natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows, the home-spun rooms here are decorated in the same rustic-refined manner evident elsewhere in the hotel. Traditional terra-cotta floors coupled with mellow-yellow walls, sea-blue accent fabrics and simple wood-grain furnishings create a warm old-fashioned ambiance; details like headboards with tile inserts add a tasteful decorative touch -- though the same can’t be said of the outdated art, which would be better suited to a chain motel. All air-conditioned units include mini-fridges, flat-screen satellite TVs, and matching bathrooms with bidets, granite-topped vanities and combination shower/tubs. In-room safes and free Wi-Fi are also standard, but both have caveats attached (there’s a charge for the former plus a dearth of electrical outlets if you want to charge up and use the latter). In addition, most accommodation categories boast terraces or balconies (some are full and furnished, other Juliet-style), with the best of the bunch delivering stunning water views.
Features
An outdoor pool, sunbathing lawn, and buffet restaurant lead the list of amenities.
Proximity to the beach is by far the best feature of the Prestige Coral Platja, but it isn’t the only one. There’s also an outdoor pool housed in a retractable structure which allows for year-round use, plus a grassy lounger-lined lawn that’s bisected by the seafront promenade. Both, however, are on the small side and can quickly fill to capacity when tour groups descend. Ditto for the all-day restaurant, a nautical-themed number which serves standard buffet-style fare with a selection of Mediterranean dishes (picture paella, Catalonian sausages, or roasted local veggies) adding variety. The hotel's spacious bar and lounge area with an equally large shaded patio provide more room for maneuvering. Other features include a 24-hour reception desk with multilingual staff and concierge; add-on dry-cleaning/laundry and on-request babysitting services; free newspapers, free high-season entertainment, free outdoor parking, and free Wi-Fi throughout.
