Bottom Line

This small, centrally located and gay-friendly hotel offers personalized service and is a good value for a three-pearl property in the popular beach town of Sitges -- about 35 minutes outside Barcelona. Rooms are clean and bright, with simple wood furnishings, beach-themed wall art, and large beds -- some have balconies or terraces. The extensive buffet breakfast, which includes Cava and churros with chocolate, is served through late morning and there's an inexpensive dinner buffet -- though there is no shortage of restaurants nearby. A small outdoor pool surrounded by greenery and an annex with a rooftop hot tub are fun places to hang out. If you're looking for a resort, try the four-pearl Dolce Sitges Resort. They don't have the same walkable location but they do have five swimming pools and several restaurants, plus a late-night lounge.

Scene

Classic and masculine decor with secluded pool area

The Galeon is a traditional property that attracts a slightly more mature crowd, particularly gay couples. The lobby, with a beautiful wood front desk, is filled with dark brown and black leather sofas and a mix of modern and classic artwork. The hotel has a main building and the Pavillon annex, which has a rooftop hot tub and a few artifacts on display, including an antique switchboard. A desktop computer and printer are available for guests to use. The pool is small, but in a peaceful area surrounded by thick trees, along with lounge chairs and umbrellas. Guests are offered a glass of lemonade upon arrival and can also get a free, early evening drink at Platjador, the Galeon’s seafront sister hotel.

Location

Near restaurants and shops, a short walk to the beach and train station

The hotel is in a central part of Sitges, a Spanish beach town on the Mediterranean Sea, about 35 minutes outside Barcelona. The sunny property is set on a pleasantly busy street lined with restaurants and shops. While not on the water, the hotel is about a 10-minute walk to some of the nearest beaches. It’s also a five-minute walk to the train station, with trains running to Barcelona in less than 40 minutes. Barcelona-El Prat Airport is about a 25-minute drive away. There's a charge for parking.

Rooms

Simple standard rooms, with more luxurious accommodations in the Pavillion

The 74 rooms at Hotel Galeon are divided between standard rooms in the main part of the hotel and superior rooms in the more modern annex. Standard rooms are simply decorated with tile floors, charming wood furniture, and flat-screen TVs. Superior rooms in the modern annex have beautiful hardwood floors, modern furniture, bathrooms with rainfall showers, and terraces or large covered balconies with striped awnings. The front rooms in the main building, which face a busy street, can be noisy. Pavilion rooms are in a separate building across the road. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, safes, and hairdryers. A pillow menu is a nice touch for this price point.

Features

Well-stocked breakfast buffet, small outdoor pool, and rooftop hot tub

The Galeon provides a well-stocked buffet breakfast served late, with churros, Cava, and eggs cooked to order. There's a dinner buffet that’s considered a good value and a free early evening drink is available at the Galeon's sister hotel, Platjador, on the seafront. Towels and umbrellas are available to take to the beach for a small refundable deposit. Along with a small outdoor pool and hot tub, the annex building has a rooftop hot tub. Wi-Fi is free, and guests can use the printer and computer in the lobby.
