Bottom Line

Housed in a gorgeous Modernist building with lovely courtyards and spacious decks overlooking the sea, the 21-room mid-range Hotel Diana is packed with charm. Rooms are cute and airy, with painted floor tiles, big windows, and simple but stylish decor. Free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, air-conditioning and minibars are great perks provided in all rooms. An excellent breakfast is served every morning on a serene terrace with sea views, and small bites are available at the bar during the day. No other amenities are available on-site, but location right in the heart of the old town and across the street from the beach allows for easy access to restaurants, bars, shops, and attractions. This is one of the best hotel choices in the area, but those looking for something a little cheaper may want to consider sister property Hotel Delfin, which features a rooftop deck with a whirlpool.

Scene

Charming boutique housed in a historic Modernist building with tranquil shaded patios

The intimate, 21-room Hotel Diana is hands down the most charming hotel in Tossa de Mar. This unique boutique is housed in a striking building designed in the early 20th century by Antoni Falguera i Sivilla, a student of the Catalan Modernist architecture school led by Antonio Gaudi. Its interiors are packed with traditional Modernist details ranging from stained glass windows to stunning fireplaces and reclaimed ceramic tile accents. The combination of neoclassical-style antiques and Modernist features lend the property lots of character, while more generic pieces of furniture balance out the more ornate elements. Large, airy spaces open onto charming little patios shaded by towering palm trees and white umbrellas, and several terraces with sea views offer plenty of space for unwinding. There isn’t much on-site aside from a breakfast area and a bar with sidewalk seating, but guests -- most of whom are Spanish, British, and French couples -- seem more than happy to spend the day out exploring and retreating early to the hotel to enjoy a drink in the lovely courtyard.

Hotel Diana is an excellent pick for couples looking to spend some quiet days away, but families seeking a more bustling atmosphere and more kid-friendly amenities may want to compare rates at the Golden Bahia de Tossa, although rooms there are generic. Couples seeking a bigger hotel with more features may also want to consider the Premier Gran Hotel Reymar & Spa.

Location

Across the street from the beach and walking distance to restaurants, shops, and attractions

Hotel Diana is located in the heart of Tossa’s old town, within easy walking distance of dozens of restaurants, bars, and shops. The main entrance is on a charming little square lined by private homes and a couple of shops, while the back of the property opens directly onto the promenade and the beach. Additional dining and shopping options can be found along the oceanfront area. Main attractions such as the Tossa Castle, the ruins of a gothic church, and the old city walls are all about a five-minute walk away, as is Platja d’es Codolar, a lovely cove located right below the ancient walls. The nearest airport is Girona-Costa Brava, located a 40-minute drive away; Barcelona-El Prat Airport is an hour-and-a-half drive away, and is served by a wider array of airlines. The hotel lacks on-site parking.

Rooms

Airy rooms with charming decor, free Wi-Fi, and air-conditioning; most have balconies

The hotel has a total of 21 rooms, including Double Rooms, Triple Rooms, Junior Suites, and a duplex suite. All were fully renovated in early 2016 and feature simple but lovely decor that incorporates Modernist-style elements such as traditional Mediterranean painted floor tiles, wood and wrought-iron accents, stained glass details, and dark door frames. All rooms are exterior-facing, but while some overlook the charming square below, others offer views of the sea. All but a few sea-szCeviews units have balconies. Air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, minibars, and electric kettles are all standard amenities, as are free Wi-Fi and free in-room safes. Most bathrooms have glass walk-in rain showers, and wooden counters and big mirrors in the sink area, but a few still have the original shower/tub combos and granite counters. Toiletries and hairdryers are also provided.

Features

Charming shaded patios with seating, a breakfast terrace, and a casual bar

The hotel has two lovely patios, both with several tables and plants. The largest one is connected to a terrace overlooking the sea, and features palm trees and wrought iron furniture shaded by big white umbrellas. The smaller one, complete with a neoclassical-style statue and painted tiles, sits below a huge skylight in the center of the property, and is a quiet retreat for the colder days. An excellent breakfast buffet is served daily on the seafront terrace or in the restaurant, depending on the weather. There is also a small, casual bar with a handful of tables directly on the promenade. It has a short menu with hot and cold drinks, small bites and basic meals, all available throughout the day.
