Bottom Line

The Hotel Checkin Sirius is located in Santa Susanna, a coastal town that's about an hours' drive from Barcelona. The three-pearl property is smaller than the other hotels clustered around it, but guests will notice that its facilities are higher in quality, if less expansive. There's no direct beach access, but highlights among features include a buffet restaurant with free breakfast, large lounge bar, and outdoor terraces, an outdoor pool on the third-floor deck with partial sea views, and a wellness center with a fitness room plus a hot tub, steam room, and sauna. The hotel's 161 guest rooms, more functional than attractive, have AC, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and semi-private balconies. It's worth comparing rates at the similar Montemar Maritim down the road.

Scene

Mid-range hotel with a third-floor outdoor pool facing the sea

Hotel Checkin Sirius is housed in an older five-story building that's lined with angular outdoor terraces and balconies. A stone walkway with well-maintained manicured lawns on either side leads straight into the hotel's gift shop and convenience store. From there, the pool deck is visible up above, jutting out to provide cover for seating on an outdoor terrace below it. There's a sidewalk that connects to the lobby, with polished tiled floors and a reception desk made of dark stone. A lounge area along the wall has a contemporary look, with cream couches beset by wood paneling under a raised ceiling decorated with hanging plants and pendant lights. Most of the guests here are older Spanish and UK couples, with a mix of French and Dutch tourists.

Location

Centrally located near restaurants and the beach

The hotel is located within a five-minute walk of the long, sandy beach in Santa Susanna, a coastal resort town between Malgrat de Mar and Pineda de Mar, near Montenegre-Corredor National Park. It's in an area crowded with several hotels and there are numerous restaurants, bars, and shops within walking distance. The airport in Girona is less than a 35-minute drive away, and Barcelona’s airport is around an hour's drive. It's only a 14-minute walk to the Santa Susanna train station, where there's a direct train to Barcelona (a one-way trip takes about 90 minutes, including the walk).

Rooms

Relaxed rooms with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and balconies, but bland decor

The hotel's 161 air-conditioned guest rooms have respectably bland decor, with tiled floors, green fabrics, and typical contemporary wood furniture. Standard rooms have either double beds or two twin beds with plain headboards and reading lamps, along with built-in desks and chairs. There are upholstered armchairs or loveseats in seating areas, and all rooms open to balconies furnished with white plastic tables and chairs. The balconies are only semi-private, with partial frosted glass panels separating long rows of neighbors. Family Rooms add a mix one, or two extra twin beds, and most have sofa beds. Suites feature wooden floors and have separate living rooms and two balconies. Free Wi-Fi is included, along with flat-screen TVs and mini-fridges, but there are no kettles or coffeemakers and use of the in-room safes costs extra. Bathrooms are basic but tidy, and come with average shower/tub combos and bidets.

Features

Outdoor pool and wellness facilities, plus restaurant and bar with live entertainment and free breakfast

The hotel's well-rounded lineup of amenities is where it shines the most. On the second floor, a large lounge bar has an outdoor terrace and an indoor stage where live music and entertainment like flamenco and magic shows are held on a daily basis. Above it on the third floor is an outdoor pool and sundeck that has partial sea views, along with loungers and umbrellas, plus a small pool bar with tapas, cocktails, and ice cream. Free breakfast is on offer in the buffet restaurant, which serves international cuisine and has a show kitchen corner for cooked-to-order meat and fish. There's also more seating on a covered outdoor terrace. The hotel lacks a full spa (no treatment rooms), but there's a wellness center with a hot tub, sauna, and steam room, along with a small fitness room that has a few cardio and weight-training machines. Parking is available for a fee, but Wi-Fi is free throughout.
