Bottom Line

H Top Amaika is an all-inclusive resort with a central location a block from the beach. The stately lobby and restaurant wow at first sight, but rooms -- while spacious and bright -- are underwhelming for a purported luxury property, with dated decor and basic amenities. The hotel features a small pool, a kids’ club with daily activities, and a fitness center complete with a whirlpool and a sauna. Additionally, guests get free access to all other sister properties in the area. But pesky fees for parking and Wi-Fi, uninspired food, and lacking room maintenance are all major letdowns.

Scene

Stately common areas -- but underwhelming rooms

Walking through the front door of the Amaika feels like stepping into an old, stately ocean liner. The wood-paneled lobby features elegant decor inspired in the Titanic, with a striking wrought-iron skylight topped with a crystal chandelier, marble floors, black leather couches, and black-and-white paintings of liners. There is a carpeted staircase leading up to the rooms with small golden statues on the wooden handrail. The bar features similar decor, with wood panelling, black and brown furniture, and small gold-rimmed wall lamps. A few portholes on walls and doors are a nod to the general decor theme. The restaurant has the same elegant feel, with white and black padded chairs, decorative ceiling moldings, and large windows. However, this elegance and attention to detail does not extend to the rooms. Decor here is bland and dated, and amenities quite underwhelming. With more inspired rooms and better food, this could be an upscale stay -- for now, the experience can be disappointing after the first impression, given the property's advertised luxury status.

Location

In central Calella, a block from the beach and near restaurants and shops

H Top Amaika is located in a residential area located blocks from the city center. There are a few restaurants, bars and shops in the immediate neighborhood, and many more a couple of streets away. The beach, featuring sun loungers and a bar, is down the block. Those looking to explore the area can find a couple of other beaches a 10-minute drive away. Barcelona can be reached in just under an hour by car, and Girona in 45 minutes.

Rooms

Dated and basic rooms are disappointing for an alleged luxury resort.

Rooms at the Amaika are spacious and bright, with large windows and furnished balconies. However, decor is dated, with flowery comforters and matching curtains, simple wooden furniture, and generic paintings on walls. Old tube TVs, empty mini-fridges, and hotel-brand toiletries are all there is in the way of amenities. Bathrooms are average, with cream-colored tiling, and tubs; some have a tub and a separate small shower. Spring mattresses can be uncomfortable, and there have been complaints of thin walls and poor room maintenance. Wi-Fi is available for a fee.

Features

A kids’ club, a pool, and a fitness center -- but no full spa and mediocre food

The hotel has a few solid amenities, including a small pool, a kids’ club, a kiddy pool, and a large bar with entertainment. The fitness center features a sauna and a tiny whirlpool, but there is no full spa in the hotel. The restaurant is elegant and bright, but food is quite underwhelming. On-site parking and Wi-Fi are available -- both for a fee. All H Top hotels offer free access to sister properties in the area, so those who want to check out other pools and restaurants can use those facilities instead.
