Located only a two-minute walk from Sitges’ beach and 10 minutes from its historic center, the Avenida Sofia Hotel & Spa is a sleek, upscale property ideal for both business travelers and vacationers. Features include a gorgeous spa with an indoor swimming pool, hydrotherapy plunge pools, an oxygen cabin, and treatment rooms for massages, as well as a large gym. Up on the roof is a solarium that has views over the city and the Mediterranean, and a pool, but it’s tiny. The 77 rooms are finished to a high standard, with high-end touches such as rainfall showerheads, bathrobes, and king-sized beds. On the downside, elevators are slow and rooms lack balconies. Families looking for more kid-friendly facilities and free breakfast should consider the Melia Stiges.
Scene
Stylish and modern hotel that primarily attracts couples
The Avenida Sofia’s scalloped facade undulates like the sea. Inside, the bright and modern interiors combine homey touches like distressed leather Chesterfield sofas with shining white marble floors, a blonde-wood bar with dramatic red lighting, silvery suede banquettes, and a grand spiraling staircase. The hotel’s restaurant is a more serene space with hardwood flooring, cream leather chair cushions, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Up on the roof is a pool, albeit a small one, set in a terrace with a bar offering tons of lucite chairs and sculpted bonsai trees. The deck also provides gorgeous views of the sea and surrounding town. The hotel primarily attracts couples on vacation.
Location
Two-minute stroll from the beach and 10 from town center
The hotel has a prime setting a two-minute walk away from the Platja de l'Estanyol in Sitges, and a 10-minute walk from the center of the city, which is home to a plethora of bars, shops, and restaurants. It’s also a 10-minute walk to Sitges station, from which it is a 40-minute journey to Barcelona by train. Alternatively, the city is a 45-minute drive away. Expect transfers to Barcelona-El Prat to take 25 minutes by car.
Rooms
Cool and contemporary rooms with bathrobes and minibars
The 77 rooms at the Avenida Sofia are decorated to a high standard, in warm neutrals with cherry or plum bed runners providing a splash of color. Superior Rooms have a large double bed and oak floors, plus a large fabric headboard in a glossy taupe. Bathrooms have cut-out windows that look into the bedroom, and a rainfall shower cubicle, as well as Molton Brown toiletries. Instead of conventional doors, the bathrooms have sliding glass doors with images of historic Sitges. Deluxe Rooms are decorated similarly, but have king-sized beds, two armchairs, and Nespresso coffeemakers. Considering this is a beach town, the rooms' lack of balconies is a downside.Junior Suites are far larger, outfitted with blonde-wood wall paneling, crimson carpets and drapes, a king-sized bed, and an ottoman upholstered in shiny silver suede, as well as two leather armchairs. The bathrooms are also more spacious, with a shower and separate bathtub. Royal Suites have a bedroom with a king-sized bed and a sitting room with a navy suede sofa, each at the opposite end of a long corridor. These also have a large round bathtub in a glass-walled room that looks into the bedroom. All rooms have a flat-screen TV, free Wi-Fi, minibar, and safe, as well as a bathrobe and slippers.
Features
Excellent spa with an indoor pool, and a rooftop pool and bar
Though there's little for kids at the Avenida Sofia, quality features are provided for couples who make up the majority of guests. A high-end spa has an indoor swimming pool in a dramatically decorated room, hydrotherapy plunge pools, a sauna and steam room, oxygen cabin, and rooms for massage and wellness treatments. Up on the roof is a solarium with a pool -- albeit a tiny one -- and a bar that serves drinks and light meals. Downstairs, the restaurant serves either a continental breakfast or a cooked one for a fee, as well as lunch and dinner with local and international options. A well-equipped gym has cardio and weight-training machines, free weights, and yoga mats. Meeting rooms are available for business travelers. There is free Wi-Fi throughout the hotel, and a parking lot, which includes free charging for electric cars.
