Bottom Line

Aurora Hotel is a stylish 18-room B&B located a short walk from Avalon’s main drag. Rooms are small (with even smaller bathrooms), but have stylish contemporary decor, and wonderful amenities -- including Tempurpedic mattresses, flat-screen TVs, DVD players, microwaves, mini-fridges, and Keurig coffeemakers. There is a chic rooftop deck with great ocean views, and a massage room offering an extensive treatments menu -- but no full restaurant or pool. Prices are a little steep for such a limited range of on-site features, but freebies such as a weekly wine and cheese hour, Wi-Fi, and continental breakfast add value.

Scene

A small boutique popular with couples

Scene Aurora Hotel

The Aurora (formerly Cloud 7 Hotel) is a small boutique housed in a three-story building with a wooden façade. Space is limited here, but custom-made furniture both in common areas and rooms makes spaces feel less cluttered. Decor is stylish and contemporary overall, with a dark palette, pops of color, and unique artwork (for purchase). The lobby is a long, narrow space with colorful couches, a couple of tables, and a small mirrored front desk. Free continental breakfast is served here every morning. With a massage room equipped with two treatment beds; small rooms that cannot fit an extra bed; and a lovely rooftop deck with ocean views but no pool, the property is more suitable for couples than for families.

Location

A short (but steep!) walk from the center

Aurora Hotel is located on a steep residential street off Avalon’s main drag. This situation offers easy walking access to restaurants, bars and shopping, and quieter nights than in more central areas. However, while the walk back from town and the beach is short, it is also quite steep, which may make it a little challenging for some. The Casino building -- Avalon’s top attraction -- can be reached in a 10-minute walk along the bay. Descanso and Avalon beaches are an easy stroll away, as is Silver Canyon Pottery, a small, family-friendly studio-museum offering a glimpse into the production and history of the island’s famous tiles. Catalina Island Golf Club is a quick drive away.

Rooms

Stylish and contemporary, with great amenities; some rooms have ocean views

Rooms Aurora Hotel

The hotel’s 18 rooms are all contemporary and stylish, with dark furniture, dull carpeting, cream-colored walls, and brown bed throws. A few have partial ocean views, and a handful have small balconies. However, it is the in-room amenities that give the Aurora an edge over other similar properties: Flat-screen TVs, DVD players, Tempurpedic mattresses, free Wi-Fi, microwaves, Keurig coffeemakers, and mini-fridges stocked with free water are available in all units. Standard rooms are small, with tiny bathrooms featuring miniature sinks, shower stalls, and Rusk toiletries. Junior Suites each feature a king bed, a sitting area with a couch and a small coffee table, and a jetted tub in the bathroom. The hotel does not offer cots, so families may want to look elsewhere.

Features

A rooftop deck with ocean views, and a massage room

Features Aurora Hotel

The hotel is light on features overall, but it does offer a couple of great perks. The rooftop deck features wonderful ocean views, a few loungers, and a couple of Bali beds. This spot is a favorite among guests for a quiet evening drink (the hotel allows guests to bring food and drinks to the rooftop), or a relaxing morning in the sun. The spa is actually just a single room with two treatment beds, but it offers an extensive massage menu, including a signature treatment that combines different types of massages, and stretching. Free continental breakfast is served every morning in the lobby, and there is a free wine and cheese hour every week. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
